@nothe in short, you can treat a string as an array, and python has a special array index syntax where you can give an alternate "step" in returning the items, and negative values iterate from end to start.

"abcdefgh"[2:6] is "cdef"
"abcdefgh"[2:6:2] is "ce"

"abcdefgh"[::2] is "aceg" and [::-2] is "hfdb"

this is actually one of the first things I ever learned about python way before i could even write it

@nothe Yeah I really don't know. They asked me to cut and paste my answer so they could send it off. They said "function that returns the string" and not "function that changes the string" so shrug. They weren't techies so I really think there was a break in the chain from whoever asked them to do the assessment.

@georgetakei Beer is the same way. I will even take a beer from a can and ask for a glass to pour it into. It hits different. Someone I know who doesn't drink was confused by this.

They asked me to write a function that would reverse a string and I just did

return s[::-1]

and they seemed dubious

but it works

I later proceeded to say, the other way to do it is

ns=""
for n in range(len(s),0,-1):
ns=ns+s[n-1]
return ns

that's when they called it showing off :D

it's pretty simple stuff tho
