Steve-o Stonebraker

I'm a nerd.

I post a mix of #ITeachPhysics and science stuff, cartoons/videogames/etc., and cute animals. I live and teach in the greater #Boston #Massachusetts area.

My toots are searchable! I will stay in the tootfinder opt-in index for now as well: tootfinder.ch/

Some hashtags I like/look at: #mondog, #caturday, #ITeachPhysics, #physics, #DestinyTheGame, #Destiny2, #Nintendo, #AnimalCrossing, #Pokemon, #StarWars, #Transformers, #animation, #comics, #Disney

#ITeachPhysics I've added animation to my #desmos "potential energy function" graph. A few premade U(x) functions are available, or you can write your own!

You don't necessarily need to say "image of" in your alt text for users to know it's an image. Screen readers will announce that it's an image. But it can help readers to specify if it's a hand-drawn image, Polaroid, infographic, screenshot, chart, map, diagram, or so on.

Part of my start-of-the-year survey for students is a spot for them to share any image that holds some sort of meaning for them and explain it to me. I get a lot of pet photos.

This student doesn't have a dog of their own but says, "I love seeing dogs." Relatable!!

#education #dogs

Screenshot of a part of a google form. The prompt reads, "tell me about why you chose that image" and the response reads "It's a dog that I saw online. I really want a dog but I can't get one right now but I love seeing dogs."

One of my favorite things about any Earth Defense Force game is the ridiculous weapon descriptions, some of which go on for multiple paragraphs of nonsense. The very strongest and weakest weapons especially are hilarious.

Here is the first flamethrower in newly-released #EDF6 hahaha. #VideoGames

Screenshot from a video game, Earth Defense Force 6. At the top are several columns of weapon names. The weapon "burner" is highlighted. Below, this description is visible:

"A gas burner for welding. Since it's for job purpose, one should lower the expectations of it as a weapon."

Vintage art for a Chesapeake & Ohio Rail Road calendar by Charles Bracker! So sweet. The sleeping kitty is "Chessie", one of the most successful cat advertising mascots of the 20th century. ripleyauctions.com/auction-lot

Painting of the interior of a passenger train car. An adorable tabby cat is curled up asleep with its head on a pillow on one of the seats as a beautiful white attendant gently tucks it in with a white sheet or blanket. Beneath the sleeping cat's seat two identical tabby kittens are making mischief.

This is the barest smidge of a spoiler I suppose, but seeing:

// MSUND12 CONNECTING

appear onscreen gave me a good sense of dread. It was there just long enough to think, "That sounds like a bad thing to have happen." And then:

// CONNECTED

Eep!

Completed the new #Destiny2 exotic mission, Encore, tonight. I play solo whenever possible so I ran into the final boss softlock problem at first. I ended up following reddit advice and switched to Whisper. I'm awful with snipers but it got me through DPS right quick. Recommended! #DestinyTheGame

@pixelfed Hi, I just took a look for the first time in a while and it seems that this plan from last fall was abandoned. Is that right? I even found a github issue where it was requested, but it was closed as "not planned" in May:

github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/i

I'd love to use pixelfed instead of other image sharing apps/sites, but without hashtag filtering it is just not doable for me--way too much stuff I don't want comes along with the stuff I do want.

I think my favorite moment is when he's comparing the changes near Cora Lake between BOTW and TOTC and says, "If you're playing Tears of the Kingdom anytime in 5 to 10 years I would avoid this area so you don't get buried alive in the mud when it all collapses".

Finally watched this video that's been in my recommendations for a few weeks. It was neat and funny! Crossover of my interests in video games and #EarthScience. Unsurprisingly, the games' water doesn't make sense overall, but it still has many realistic subtleties!

One of my summer projects was to update and catalog many of the #Desmos graphs/sims I use when #ITeachPhysics. This page shows what I've made and has permalinks to any future updates of the graphs. I'll still post here about new ones and updates of course!

Have received a notice from my undergrad alma mater that my "email for life" alum account will be deleted soon.

Technically I can keep it live if I remember to sign into it at least once per year from now on. I don't need or really want it, but it still feels like a promise is being retracted.

@heafnerj Somebody on bluesky made basically the same suggestion. I think I can work around it with my HR person who handles the PD money.

But like... it's weird, right? That there's not built-in way or explanation for how to have your institution pay? Wouldn't a lot of members like to pay that way?

I'm trying to get my #AAPT membership and summer meeting registration in order, but I'm not seeing a way to pay with a purchase order from my school. Does anyone know if that's possible and, if so, how to do it? #ITeachPhysics

A friend of mine was lucky enough to take this remarkable photo of the recent solar eclipse, in which a plane had left a contrail below the eclipse. She was wondering though why the portion of the contrail that was in the path of the eclipse appeared curved. My initial guess was that it was some sort of refractive effect, but why would the refractive index of the air be so much different inside the shadow of the eclipse than outside of it? With only a few minutes of eclipse I doubt that there would be a significant temperature change. Anyway, any theories would be welcome!

Background art is an essential part of any movie, and Studio Ghibli never ceases to amaze us with their intricate and vibrant designs, Only Yesterday (1991) is no exception.

🖼️🖼️🖼️🖼️

The breathtaking backgrounds were brought to life by the talented background artist Kazuo Oga.
Oga has worked with major directors Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Osamu Dezaki.

When making my last few sandwiches before heading into a weeklong break, I perfectly finished off the bread, deli meat, and cheese *simultaneously*. I am like unto a god now.

I was idly searching around for some info about cat color markings and how an individual strand of hair could have various colors (it's apparently called agouti)...

and then I stumbled on this site about cat genetics and it's waaaaaaay more informative than I ever dreamed of with lots of clear images. Worth a read if you're even remotely curious about cat patterns and genetics!
