New article! The position of machine translation in translation studies: A definitional perspective

Omri Asscher considers how definitional approaches to #translation that preceded the MT era, formulated with human translation in mind, correspond with today’s MT.

The article engages with two influential definitional strands in the discipline: a-priori prescriptive definitions, and descriptive definitions focused on the reception of translations.

@isoglosse Always makes me smile when I recall a friend who, after reading my thesis, said "What is this? I can understand everything. You need to rewrite it."

A suggestion: Every scientific article (that is published in open access) should have an abstract for nonspecialists.

Making publications accessible is an important first step, but the second step seems just as important to me: making the content comprehensible.

This suggestion is inspired by an article I read. The topic was interesting and not overly complicated, but the wording was fairly opaque (I was only able to understand it as it was not too far from my own area of expertise).

Power cut means I can't work so I'll just hang around here. Or call a friend, actually.

@fussballinguist looking for potential but finding limitations. Mixed feelings - including that of being fooled to think it was so great in the beginning πŸ˜‚

So cool when subtitlers get these working conditions - and free time to write about the experience

Recent developments are a great reminder that #socialmedia are not public services. They are privately owned and their owners have the liberty to make decisions affecting all users.

I used to forget about that and use them as if they were open fields, until I was reminded that all the little houses I've been building on them can be wiped down by the owner.

(in my case "little houses" are notes taken at conferences, thoughts and ideas about my academic interests)

In the not so perfect life (instruction given), I did not end up married. But I studied economics again.

@Kichae Hi! Thanks for the insights. I see you don't use hashtags within your text, but add them in the end. Is it a common practice? E.g. for readability?

2022-12-17

And here is another life I could have had. The personal life description is creepy, as I was indeed married on a small island (of the Ionian sea) and had two kids a boy and a girl. The "gentle man" is called Vassili πŸ˜…

Helping me improve my professional emails?
- Yes! Very happy with the output.

Helping me correct my language student's work?
- No. It makes a lot of errors (e.g. false corrections). If I sent that feedback, the students would be perplexed. And it takes so much time to spot them, that I'd rather and provide the feedback myself.

The word #subtitler does not exist in important dictionaries like Merriam-Webster and Collins. I wonder if there is something we can do to change that.

#SubtitlerNotInDictionary

@subtitlers

Merriam Webster search result for the word "subtitler", stating that "the word you've entered isn't in the dictionary.
