an experiment ends

2018-08-15

OK, about to blast this machine to smithereens.

I look unrelatedly forward to a Dune-like Scattering, which I hope will happen. The hegemony of software needs to end.

Odd that by chance one chapter of my life closes as another begins. This year has been me discovering what I care about, what I'm willing to do, what I want to do, and how much I can put up with from other people. (the threshold for the latter is fairly low).

I haven't had a paying job for the last few months. I've gotten fitter, started going to bed early, started cooking more, focused on my prose writing, and learn to let go of others' hypocricy. I found my center. Grateful for unemployment.

Ummm actually it's pronounce gee-peg everyone knows that I don't care what the creator says.

Mastodon is a piece of software, not a network. The federated network itself still needs a good brand so we can talk about it without saying all the things that make it up, or using the names of the underlying protocols.

I got a job. It's less than a mile from me and after training it will be 30-35 hours a week. That means I'll be able to focus on doing some OSS as well as my novel(s). I think this is going to be a great thing.

Subposting myself, Emotions are important, but they are better shared in some contexts more than others.

Also can I just point out the irony of railing against JS-only applications while using Mastodon?

2018-07-31

I'm tired of devs blaming other devs for the state of the web or for the prevalence of JS. It's the companies. To blame the latest generation of devs for not creating web exps that work w/o JS is not only misplaced, it's anti-diversity. People new to the industry don't automatically know everything. Companies push devs to ship ship ship. Stop blaming devs. That assumes devs have power when many don't. That condescending attitude is one of the most frustrating things about devs on Mastodon to me.

@drh PluralSight has some. I found them because I used to use CodeSchool which was absorbed by PluralSight. pluralsight.com/paths/css

Otherwise I don't know of very many good resources for this at all. The blogosphere in general seems to be the best way to learn about topics in a target way.

That said, if you run into problems with CSS, Sass, or BEM I would be happy to answer questions. I've got a blog post on BEM in the queue to work on. :crt_w_test_pattern:

There should be a global 'awareness' week for developers. For a week reduce your RAM to 2 GB, disable all cores except 2, downscale your resolution to 1366x768 and cap your internet at 1 Mbps (or less for mobile developers)...

Maybe, just maybe we will start to have less crappy, bloated software.

@wrdwoose i hops you can next time, for that's quite bitters.
