@HamonWry It's an opportunity for shedding layers of cynicism

@JenB @Runkefer @waldoj @griesar Thanks, Jen.

If it all goes well and I can make this happen, I'll open up some kind of tip jar for others to help defray costs... esp. if it is successful enough to incur any meaningful amount of them. 🙂

@Runkefer @waldoj @griesar @JenB Then I'll work on migration instructions as well as brand-new-to-Mastodon instructions... and then open things up to anyone in the Cville area.

If anyone is interested in helping out with any of those steps, please send me an email (steven.l.johnson [at] gmail.com) and let me know how you can help!

@Runkefer @waldoj @griesar @JenB Thanks.

Thanks for sharing that—it is really interesting to read. I'm close to biting the bullet and creating a cville Mastodon server.

First step is picking a domain name. After that, getting mastodon setup on a hosting service... if masto.host was accepting new customers, I'd use them... since they aren't, I'm leaning towards using digitalocean and managing a few more details myself.

@heidilifeldman @adamdavidson

For anyone on a different server, here's a page showing recent posts for that server journa.host/public

Another reminder, since we got a lot of new people!

Please assume all messages you send on any mastodon instance are not private. While we have no interest in reading your private messages, they are not encrypted in sending or receiving instances, and we cannot guarantee your privacy, especially when they cross instance boundaries.

If you have something private and sensitive to say, take it to another, more privacy-oriented system.

Thank you and happy tooting!

@adamdavidson I had a cat return after a month away.

It had lost some weight and its fur was a bit scraggly, but within a few days it was all back to normal—acting as if the whole great adventure had never happened.

Best wishes to you for Marmalade to make a speedy return.

It's interesting to see the results on the Bird Site. I interpret it as lots of Mastodon-curious folks over there. twitter.com/StevenLJohnson/sta

@jeremy do they *pun*ish you with bad ratings?

more seriously, i find that even bad "dad jokes" are oft appreciated by students as an attempt to connect with them.

I wonder if there's any research if it is a gender-specific thing... as in, what's the equivalent for non-male instructors, and do they benefit as well?

@Espo Thanks, that is helpful feedback!

If I was involved with creating a "Cville" server, I'd also make sure there was a detailed step-by-step guidance on how to migrate (and, how to join for new Mastodon users).

From what I understand there is some hassle involved, so I'm trying to be realistic in the poll options.

Question for my Cville peeps... if there was a "Cville" Mastodon server, would you go through the hassle of moving there from your current server to a "Cville" one?

(Cville folks, please boost for better reach.)

@Jimduncan It's yet another reminder that we're in a climate emergency. This is far beyond unseasonable—hot and humid on nov 11 in Cville is... other-worldly.

Even more scary, in 20 years we'll likely be reminiscing about the good old days of the early 2020s before things got really crazy

@austinkocher There's also the whole US election day thing, which is the kind of news event that drives media consumption and social media engagement

A particularly catastrophic day at Twitter. The people reassuring advertisers yesterday that everything was fine quit, along with the heads of trust and safety, ad sales and most importantly the three people who were responsible for filing a document to the FTC detailing their protections in place for user data. Those three were the heads of information security, compliance and privacy. When they leave like that you know it’s bad. Law-breaking, privacy violating, insecure bad.

@aristofontes Yes. Click on their name, when you see the profile, click on the three stack periods, choose "Hide boosts from @ name"

I've already found this feature indispensable for someone I follow. It's a great option.
