@lexfri how European of you.

@antonyjohnston
fair, or maybe a Michelin system where ANY stars means its on a scale of great. There is no thumbs down or zero stars, just a grand sea of “not good enough to mention”.

But humans are humans and we want to grade things on our internal scale. I’m coming around to your simple binary system.

2025-07-12

@antonyjohnston I claim and will forever claim that 5 stars is too much choice. I believe there should be three stars. Bad, meh, and good.

Maybe… MAYBE, a Roger Ebert style 4th star for “this is a genre defining work of genius”, but probably not because then 4 stars becomes “good” over time.

@LexFreagles I’m sure the pigeons appreciated it.

@VioletPixel I’ve now seen a mid-2000’s version of windows in my head and I don’t like it.

@TSindelar @joesteel this is simple. Make a packet based rice mix, preferably Knorr, and ask how they like it.

It doesn’t specifically identify carbon monoxide or lead poisoning, but it points you in the right direction.

Oh I forgot I took this photo at the Anchorage Barnes & Noble (Jason’s favorite place in Anchorage). Let’s see how well this issue of Monocle ages, shall we?

@Gte once again LDAP ruins somebodies day, and it isn’t even the same LDAP!

2025-07-07

@knud @scalzi I had George RR Martin sign 3 books for me and he immediately stopped writing.

2025-07-06

@VioletPixel tell me you haven’t wanted to hear Quadraphonic sound off an 8-track at least a few times.

2025-07-06

@joesteel I now despise this person I’ve never heard of. Boo Edward!!!

2025-07-06

@VioletPixel ok hear me out. Reintroduce tape adapters so you can run your retro cd player into your Bluetooth enabled casset player. If kids want to embrace the 90s they have to embrace all of it.

2025-07-05

@VioletPixel heard recently that some young’ns are now becoming obsessed with CD’s because they sound better than compressed music; and they like that they’re smaller, more durable, and more convenient (track skipping) than vinyl.

It’s hard to argue with them.

Are mini discs still under patent? Because Sony might have something in their back pocket.

2025-07-05

@VioletPixel i feel like i have heard of this move happening often, in one direction or the other.

Sounds like she needs to be afforded a couple more robots.

2025-07-05

@bojordan inefficient, but wise. Or maybe not… I don’t want to overthink a two sentence summary of a system.

2025-07-05

@chockenberry Steve had some problems, but he at least looked at the OS he was releasing…

2025-06-28

@VioletPixel well we agree that it can be improved from a software perspective. I’m just old and thinking of old walkmans and while those could have been improved with technology we didn’t know would exist one day, they were perfect at that time.

Then they changed formats. The fuckers.

2025-06-28

@blankbaby I do not have this experience with fingernails because I will randomly bite them.

TOENAILS on the other hand will grow to the point that they dig into the aforementioned toe or disrupt my gait. Once they’ve reached that point specialized tools are in order.

2025-06-28

@VioletPixel oh, completely agree on the OS. It’s felt for years like Apple has willfully held back the OS. Certainly since the M series era. But again, once you make a perfect product how do you convince people to buy another? It can’t get better so it just has to wear out.

2025-06-28

@VioletPixel this is the problem of all hardware and software companies. Once you perfect a product how do you make it better?
