I canāt tell you all the details.
Not just because I literally canāt (it would take a lifetime, wouldnāt it? To describe to you every room, every person, every breath?). But also because some of the details will always have to be left unspoken.

There are a hundred thousand threads that weave together into a life. A hundred thousand choices and a hundred thousand mistakes and a hundred thousand coincidences. They all make us who we are.
In writing these things down, I have to choose which ones to tell you.
I have to name them, give them shape. Put them into the form of a story.
Conflict. Complication. Escalation. Resolution. Internal change. Character arc.
You start one place. You end another.
I was one person, and then I became what I am now.
I have to choose the details that will tell the truth the best.
Thereās something about the memory that has the quality of the gloaming. As if it all happened when it was not night, but not day. Not winter, but not spring. As if the in-between were a thing I could touch as I was trying to fall asleep; a quilt, making up the threads of the parts of my life that were destinedāthe parts of all of our lives that are touched by something much bigger, much more divine.
I knew, in the deepest part of my body, the place that still hummed with faith, with belief in mysteries, that she was going to change my life.
I was either 22 or 23. The math doesnāt quite add up when I look back at my CV unless my CV was a year off or this all happened in the fall or winter, sometime in the middle of the semester. And thatās possible?
The night before I met Gloria I couldnāt sleep.
In hindsight this fact feels impossible to reconcile unless I believe in fate, or prophecy, or some kind of foresight. Ironically, I donāt think Gloria would believe in any of these things. Or at least she didnāt then. Sometimes, in quiet vanity, I like to imagine maybe meeting me changed her as much as me meeting her changed me.
Because I knew meeting her was going to change me.
Itās why I couldnāt sleep.

Hereās some from a piece I started writing when a friend asked for people to write her mother, who had just lost her husband of 70 years, Christmas cards for her first Christmas without him. It ended up being more than would fit in a card and Iām planning to put up a little every week. Iām calling it a Liturgy for the Dispossessed

my daughter came up RANTING about her HS civics teacher & his AUDACITY after Jan 6 when he MUTED HER just because she wouldnāt stop screaming at dumbass magats how damaged they were & OK maybe she said two F bombs probably she deserved to be muted FINE
