We all know about Race and Gender being gatekeepers in Infosec.
The other real big gatekeeper that can tie into both the others is money.
"Home Labs" either physical or virtual have a cost.
Study materials, have a cost.
Internet Access has a cost.
And as small as some of these costs might seem, they all add up. So when trying to help people break into the field, see how you can do it at lower costs or free if possible. Not everyone is privileged.
Oppenheimer: Albert, that's brilliant!
Einstein: Thank you, Bob. We can do so much when inspired.
Oppenheimer: I can see! The lyrics are fabulous!
I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation
Come on Barbie, let's go party!
I asked why the library didn't have a Juneteenth holiday. The response was "It's not one in the policy manual." I wrote to the trustees, they put it on the agenda, voted unanimously for it, and now it's a library holiday.
When we talk about white supremacy and we talk about libraries, let's just think about how a group of well-meaning but ultimately non-proactive trustees (and director) just kind of... didn't think about this for two years, just never put it on the agenda. That's how it works.
I don't remember where I first saw it but whoever said "I like being up early but hate waking up early" really gets me.
@binsk rofl good point. Idk, I'm of the mindset of not contributing to empty gesture culture. I just think the model could do a better job, if needed at all. There are plenty of ways to soften a blunt statement without changing its meaning!
Like by adding detail, or an emoji. Or, in that exact example of "this is never going to work" instead of stating something you believe as fact, stating it as a prediction which is actually a more true statement anyway (unless you actually literally know the future in this scenario based on scientific evidence of what the outcome should be, like adding 2 and 2, knowing nobody is adding anything else behind your back, and expecting 5.). So like "I think this won't work" or even "I predict this won't work".
If that's not enough, the model can stack on the adding detail method. "I think this won't work, but I trust you to do the right thing" or "but I'm willing to wait and see" would be solid recommendations, which obv the user can then go and confirm if true or not and pick their fave.
@binsk personally I don't think so. Because that prompt and it's result do *not* mean the same thing. But, if what it spat out is true for you also you just didn't think to say it yourself, sure! But if using that prompt is in fact getting across the wrong message, I'd advise against it! For example, what if they take you up on your request to brainstorm....and you don't actually want to do it....

On European social media we often discuss American issues and talk to Americans on social media - but doesn't it make sense for us to talk more to Nigerians, South Africans and Kenyans, and about their news, because that's who's awake at the same time as us?
Let me know if you are from these time zones, in #Africa, and I will follow you.
