@Seven Nice, looks a bit like Mike from Monsters Inc. mixed with the helper bots from Fallout.

In the Proto-Indo-European language, one doesn't say: "human, person of the Earth"
But instead one says: "digimon, digital monsters, digimon are the champions" and I think that's beautiful.

@strypey @Nezchan @breadandcircuses This entire conversation is ridiculous. You'd have to either have these chain-gang-carriages electrified along specific routes, or they'd need batteries to get them between passenger-boarding points. I can't see anybody being onboard with such a ridiculously convoluted system.
@carlysagan Saw this HN discussion that reminded me of your post:
I’m scared for the world right now. It seems like everyone I interact with is just concerned with protecting themselves & their bank account &
that no one aspires to change or improve anything for the world. So I just want to say that I want to change the world. I want to change everything. I want to change the whole f-ing solar system, ok??? Ok.
#JPEGXL / #JXL, the most requested and upvoted focus area proposal for #web #Interop, has again been rejected as a discussion topic for 2024's web platform Interop industry event, because "We did not have consensus to include this proposal."
Given the industry's broad support, lack of "consensus" sounds an awful lot like "the Google Chrome team lead who authored the AVIF format arranged for it to be vetoed."

@dreo Sure, ideally all research would require the submission of pipelines before a paper is even accepted. But we're nowhere near that standard yet, and LLM's might be a good solution for this slow transition period. All we have now are tired researchers without any time eyeballing someone else's pipeline and wondering "how did they produce that image?"
@dreo I agree with a lot of your points.
I still argue that LLM's are good at pointing out obvious flaws that tired reviewers might overlook. They're also excellent at finding the code repositories mentioned in the paper and assessing the reproducibility / maintainability aspect of the paper, something which a lot of reviewers also overlook since they focus mainly on the science.
Maybe LLM's could be a nice first-pass tool for reviewers or editors, before being passed on to a human?
@dreo If the weights are open sourced and the scientific community can tune the model for better reviews, then I am all for it.
If it's some random company promoting their "computer says no" blackbox LLM as a service to publishers, then no thank you.
There should always be a scientist-in-the-loop for these reviews, even if it's just tuning the review models
German cycling activist Andreas Mandalka aka #natenom (43) has been killed by a 77 year old car driver while he was cycling on a road.
He was known for his efforts to raise political and authority awareness about the need for safe cycling infrastructure. Too often he was criticised and paternalised for this.
RIP #natenom

I just released a new collection of Amiga #ASCIIart! Here's a few examples, but it's 5959 lines long so there's plenty more...

@sundogplanets Please don't use Ubuntu, they're currently in the process of monetizing their product and have started putting ads for themselves in their updates. Please try Debian instead, it's what Ubuntu is based on and the Debian team still have all of our interests at heart
this came from a conversation about why you'd vousvoyer someone in "voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir" and apparently you'd do that if it was 1974 and you're being very formal.
Apparently you wouldn't do this to proposition a group of people, though, even if it gramatically sounds like you might
NHS across UK spends a ‘staggering’ £10bn on temporary staff | The Guardian
Reminder that this money does *not* go to the temps (mostly nurses and doctors) who only get a tiny fraction of it: it's money paid to commercial employment agencies, ie. Tory donors. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/jan/16/nhs-across-uk-spends-a-staggering-10bn-on-temporary-staff
