We hope that the dataset finds its way to scholars of the nineteenth century and its press. Please get in touch if you are interested in working with our data and multimodal embeddings. In 2025, we will organize online meetings and an in-person workshop about the data and associated methods.

We've extracted multimodal embeddings from these illustrations, enabling search with text and visual prompts. Users can find images of railway accidents by typing 'an illustration of a railway accident'. Plus, these embeddings help us cluster ILN images by categories like 'map' or 'portrait'.

Looking forward to presenting our (soon to be) open-access multimodal dataset containing 140.351 illustrations of the Illustrated London News (and other British nineteenth-century periodicals) at #RSVP2024

This short video (youtube.com/watch?v=HTgNLI-3lJ) explains our research converging 3 x #c19 historical datasets for 'Beyond the Tracks'; available for Open and Early Access with UoL Press on their Manifold book platform: read.uolpress.co.uk/read/beyon . In the chapter we explore the spatial patterning related to railway infrastructure in 19th century Britain using a mix of computational methods, with @LivingWithMachines colleagues, Josh Rhodes, Jon Lawrence, Kaspar Beelen and @kmcdono #dh #history
