@tootbrute 25 is my current years goal, which I am doing very poorly at hitting 🙃

#koreader is truly excellent.

It took some time to get comfortable with the UI when using it on an Android phone, but it's so worth it.

Searching #wikipedia and downloading articles as epubs blew my mind.

Wish I had an #ereader to run it on.

Here's your yearly reminder that our global maps do not depict reality simply because map projections are a goddamn mess, and geography ≠ geometry. Really good article. I've posted it a few times already but it reshaped my world view quite a bit. unchartedterritories.tomaspueyo.com/p/maps-disto...

@puffnfresh Ah after some reading of the mentioned AS/NZS 5139:2019 I see that in this case the battery you installed would be considered Category 3 and it's not required to be part of the CEC list.

Thanks again for the info, look forward to seeing what else you get up to!

@puffnfresh Thanks I appreciate the reply, and the call out to the relevant standards.

I guess I had imagined the off-grid aspect would have avoided the Clean Energy Council approved devices list, which I would expect is impossible for recycled batteries to meet.

But perhaps I am mistaken on that front, and it's only the inverter / solar charger that applies too, not the batteries.

Thanks again for the reply, Tim

@puffnfresh This is incredibly cool! Thanks for posting your write up on your blog, I love to see off-grid systems and repurposing of recycled batteries!

How did you go with the mains wiring side of this? I would be very interested in tackling a similar project, but I've found some electricians hesitant working with on systems with non-traditional batteries in Aus.

Was it helpful in this cause because the grid was completely not involved, and as such, battery regulations were less relevant?

A tweet from DOGE

The @USGSA IT team just saved $1M per year
by converting 14,000 magnetic tapes (70 yr
old technology for information storage) to
permanent modern digital records.

Below it is a community note.

Despite its age, magnetic tape is still
highly favorable for long-term, static data
archives. It offers cost-effectiveness
(cheaper than disk/cloud), longevity
(outlasts disk drives), offline security
(resists cyber threats), and high capacity
(up to 50TB per tape).
