or in other words, launch migration. Bye, mastodon.cloud, and thanks for all the fish.

@Alon Well, Mastodon has a super-nice API so in principle it ought to be pretty simple. But I poked around looking for Mastodon bulk uploader software and don’t see anything.

Realistically, I kinda doubt that having the whole shebang here in Mastodon would be that helpful, nobody could possibly manage to scroll all the way back.

Hey everyone, this is to alert that I will be switching instances later this evening and become @timbray@hachyderm.io

If you’re following me, you *should* be dragged along and see no real change. But sometimes things break. So if I seem to go silent (and that’s not an improvement) you might have to re-follow.

If I’m following you, I’m using Masto’s nice export/import and that should take care of itself too.

All this may take a day or two to complete, they tell me.

See you on the other side.

2022-12-15

Except, ha-ha, while it works in the Masto compose window, it doesn't work in my feed display. *Sigh*. The future, unevenly distributed as usual.

TIL about ZWJ emoji.

For example, 👩‍🎨 is three Unicode characters. Woman + ZWJ + Artist Palette.

Also, cut-n-paste Just Works with these things everywhere including my Terminal and my IDE.

OMG an actual real no-armwaving production application relying on #blockchain: nozominetworks.com/blog/tracki

The application? Malware enablement.

@OliverC

Look, I understand blockchain. And while I suppose quite a few miner and exchange coins are held in hardware wallets, the proportion of retail Btc holders who use them rounds to zero. I made quite a lot of money buying & selling Btc 2013-17 and never ran any wallet.

So for the mass of retail investors, also known as the Greater Fool bagholders being robbed by the Ponzi, Btc is de facto centralized.

2022-12-15

@OliverC So, decentralized in theory but not in practice.

I have such issues with Christians who call other Christians "not real Christians" b/c they're harmful--it's gaslighting to the victims of Christianity's brutal history.

Here's what engaging w/harmful branches of a tradition can look like, from Rabbi Dr. Haviva Ner-David. 1/x

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am deeply concerned about Israel's newly elected government -- the most religiously and politically right wing government in this country since the State's establishment -- and the effects it will have on both those living within the green line and those living in the Occupied Territories. This is why it is so important, especially now, to support organizations and grassroots movements working to secure progressive values and protect human rights on this land.
As a rabbi, I find it especially upsetting that some of the scariest voices in this new government claim to speak in the name of Jewish values. It is true there are verses in the Torah and teachings in the Talmud that promote separation and violence, but there are just as many if not more that promote unity and peace. It is up to us to choose the Judaism we want to manifest in the world.

@nelson BTW have been really enjoying your Starlink posts. It's impossible not to have complicated feelings about that operation.

2022-12-15

@nelson Agree with everything you say, except for too many people will read the word “simple” as implying “easy”. Which, obvs not the case. I mean, I’m an example of a person who didn’t know about this and IPv6 in my brain has been pushed further back on the “someday” shelf.

2022-12-15

@nelson It's relevant if you're a network professional trying to fix the problem, but if you're just trying to use IPv6 and you're told "OK, but it won't support connections to customers of this one particular big ISP” my management brain hears “IPv6 is broken”.

All these people coming back at me saying “not an IPv6 problem, a business problem”. Well OK, but so what?

It reads to me like IPv6 is not usable in the general case. In the vernacular, “broken”.

Really first-rate crypto-skeptic article: theatlantic.com/technology/arc

I don’t think it says anything that hasn’t been said by others (including me) for the last 5 years or so, but James Block is articulate, eloquent, puts it better than most of us have. Reading it might help you warn friends away from crypto.

Ewww… apparently IPv6 routing is b0rked.

@vicuzumeri @laurendw Well, anything you post on the Internet should be assumed to be publicly on the Internet forever. I'm more worried about contact details like your instance admin database might have and data about your login time and login location and so on.

@pjf I have dear friends & connections in Melbourne and the prospect of living there has come up, but that weather, man. My least favorite combination was 38°C with a leaden-grey sky and a howling wind… In a normal place you’d go hide in the basement only Aussie houses don’t have them so I dunno.

They offer a consumer-commerce infrastructure platform and are doing quite well. They gather a *lot* of data about platform users, and their customers - the people building on the platform - are always asking for analytics on the interaction data, and so far, they haven' managed to automate this, so they're doing custom code. The need to build a customer-facing analytics interface, freeing customers to answer their own questions.

If this might be you, DM me please.

Hey, I was talking to an interesting startup and they're looking for someone with good credentials in data analytics and observability. Details in follow-on post below.
