Dr Tim

Deep End GP and Churchill Fellow working on Dharawal Country in Aboriginal Community Control. Complex clinical care, policy, education, writing on Indigenous Health, Health Equity, that sort of stuff. Play viola and football, but not at the same time (He/Him)

I wrote about not being paternalistic as a doctor, for the @bjgp.social and wondered if we might be maternalistic instead.

I've worked in the same clinic for 20 years now. I never thought I'd be in one place for so long. I had a few thoughts on being a GP for a long time in the @bjgp.social

@neenish_tart That's a bit weird. Not really sure I want to read it though.

2025-04-11

@stufromoz I could, but do I really want to read it?

2025-04-11

I can't read this article, because paywall, but I can read The Guardian, because not paywall, so who knows?

2025-02-06

@stufromoz Totally. It always seemed quite abstract until {waves arms in air pointing at everything}

2025-02-06

I'm sure I'm not the only person to post this, but it does seem relevant *right now*.

Today is National Viola Day (I don't know which country - it should be wherever you are right now!)
This gives me a great excuse to remember the beautiful piece I commissioned during the COVID lockdowns, played amazingly by Katie Yap.

Anyway. Please read my report, share widely, enjoy.
I'm happy to come and talk to anyone about it!

You'll notice that what I'm arguing for - because *all* evidence points this way - is properly funded primary health care - relationship-based, continuity over time, comprehensive.
ACCHOs do this well, though all of primary care could do so much more with proper funding.

Recommendation 5
Develop health policy and funding that promotes health equity
Apply a socioeconomic lens to all health policy (as well as rural/remote and First Nations lenses).
You'd be surprised how rarely this is done currently in Australia.

2024-12-15

Recommendation 4
Develop the Deep End GP Workforce
Get extra GPs into Deep End areas – teach Deep End skills, fund Health Equity Fellows,
(Other health professionals, too of course - for proper team-based care, NOT for task substitution.)

2024-12-15

Recommendation 3
Support local action on social circumstances affecting health
Support local action on food security, on housing, on access to nature and physical activity. ACCHOs do this already, but everyone needs access.
(Looking at you, PHNs!)

2024-12-15

Recommendation 2
Recognise the expertise of Deep End GPs
Whenever you read or think “GPs should….” Ask why we don’t already. Ask your local GPs. Don’t write a report. Don’t offer a webinar. Know that there is likely to be a good reason, and just ask!

2024-12-15

Recommendation 1
Recognise and support Deep End GPs in Australia
Who are the Deep End GPs in your area? Look after them, support them, fund them!

2024-12-15

It's here! My Churchill Fellowship report on my visit to Deep End GPs is published!
You can download it from here churchilltrust.com.au/fellow/t
Of course you should read it - it's not dull - but if you want a quick spoiler, here are my recommendations - a brief thread...

Is anyone calling Elon's site Truth SoXial yet?

2024-11-06

In need of some good news?
This is Sartre. She's been missing all day. Normally she would be sat at my computer desk, taking part in Zoom calls.
Turns out she was shut in the linen cupboard all day.

Tell me.
Should I wait before I start to worry?
Because I may have started already.
