Do you re-read favourite novels? Most of my friends don’t #books #Poll
I used to play in too many orchestras, and currently play in none. I'm interested in many things, often science, language or music related.
I like words (especially ones that don't exist yet), and cheese. I hate underthinking, football, parsnips, and rigid rules about commas.
Jeg bruker av og til et omtrent norsklignende språk, but am not in fact Norwegian. 🎻
@brianbilston @CellySally I heard you on Radio 4. More than once, I think. And well before 11 pm, too. What could be more glamorous than that?!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a new account in possession of a verification code must be in want of a better password than that, you fool, you absolute buffoon
@NatureMC And although "jeg satt" means "I sat", "Jeg har satt" means "I have set". (My memory aid: "satt" only means "sat" if it's sat on its own, i.e. if it's not got "har" with it.)
@NatureMC There's a group of verbs in Norwegian that are hideously confusing to learn when first encountered if you know English and German. They're the ones for see, say, sit and set. Here's the infinitive, simple past and past participle for each of them:
• to see: se, så, sett
• to say: si, sa, sagt
• to set: sette, satte, satt
• to sit: sitte, satt, sittet
So "jeg har sett" means "I have seen" not "I have set", "har satt" means "have set" not "have sat", and "sagt" isn't present tense.
@stonebear2 @beecycling Neither wholly holey nor wholly unholey. But they do exemplify the concept of "thin places".
@clarebee Can I keep the dictionaries open? There are only seven of them ¹ . . .
_____
¹ Not true. There are seven *tabs*, but some contain multiple dictionaries. It's probably about eleven or twelve altogether.
Pete having a snooze on the window sill. A beautiful day outside! #PiratePete #parrot #birb
@beecycling Very true. Especially in my case, where not enough of my existing socks contain enough actual sock . . .
I've started investing in stocks.
Beef, chicken, vegetable... 🐄🐔🥕
One day I hope to become a bouillonaire. 😏
@beecycling For some reason I saw "investing in socks" and thought "Hmm, that seems very sensible. Do I need to as well?" 🧦
Every year has a Feb 29th. But most years, we call it March 1st. We only call it Feb 29th when it falls on March 0th.
@helenclayton Aaaargh . . . !!
Er . . . possibly Dec 36th? But which ones?
@helenclayton I think it might be. It's definitely not Wednesday because no milk came, yesterday was a weekday, and it doesn't seem to be new year yet . . . that all seems consistent with Tuesday . . . I think . . . 🤔
@EricMartin Thanks! :-) I was concerned that "insect" would conjure up a misleading image for people who know about the legs.
@EricMartin That photo is superb! The alt-text shouldn't call the creature an insect, though—insects have six legs, and that has something like 14.
This man is just an amazing photographer of the natural world!
