The state of identity verification in the UK:
1. "You need a utility bill with your full name and address".
2. Of course these are all online now, and even if you try to get paper ones for this very purpose the companies keep pushing you to online instead.
3. Go download a PDF of the bill.
4. "We cannot accept online bills, it must have been posted to your address"
5. Print out the PDF
6. Take a photo of it
7. Email it to them
8. Accepted

As a blind Mastodonian who is made happy by alt text every day, I'd like to request anyone who feels inclined or able, to post and describe insects. I've really enjoyed the occasional alt text describing flying and crawling things.

Aside from the fact that history quickly proved her right, I'm struck by how utterly dignified and restrained her protest was. She didn't trash the Sistine Chapel. She tore up a photograph of the Pope at the end of a televised set. That's it. It cost her her career.

Types of people who use Mastodon:
- IT-specialists, open-source enthusiasts
- media specialists who are actually aware of Facebook's etc business model
- people who are fed up of Elon Musk's puerile delinquency
- people who are fed up of "regular social media's" algorithm-fanned toxic hostility and addictiveness and are trying to detox on Mastodon
Types of people who are largely (still) missing from Mastodon:
- those who just want to socialise, share info, basically just use social media

Trying out Mastodon has been an excellent tool for analysing my behaviour and needs, re: social media sites.
What I've learned: more than anything, I need a functioning search. I use socials for news a lot, and if i can't track a story, the platform is of little use to me.
I also want to use it as a memory aid: if I can't find smth from months back via search, the whole site becomes if little use to me.
I'm a little sad, but I can't make Mastodon work for me, at all.
No idea whether the news has reached Mastodon or not, but #Estonian director Anna Hints won the #Sundance Film Festival's Directing Award for her #documentary film "Smoke Sauna Sisterhood" last night.
Can't wait to see it; one of my abs fav Estonian smoke saunas should feature in it a bit, and one of the dynamos of the Estonian #smokesauna culture, Eda Veeroja, a gem of a woman.

@david_colquhoun yeah, that's pretty much my experience, too. More trivial example, but I was trying to find Glass Onion conversation the evening I watched it, and...no. Relying on people wanting to hashtag keywords like it's instagram in 2015, is...not really working.
