@norootcause possibly to prevent shoulder surfing (e.g. a spy cam?) and someone quickly submitting it before you do?
I am not saying this is realistic, but not impossible either.

@jpmens I do not even comprehend what they say.
To me who never used their app it sounds like this:
* this is what you used so far
* we know it is popular
* to make it "better" we disable this function

WARNING! This image may trigger PINSecurity. From an analysis of 3.4m PIN code leaked from several data breaches informationisbeautiful.net/vis

A heatmap reveals the most common 4 digit PIN numbers, visualised from the data leaked from several large data breaches. The horizontal axis plots the frequency of the first two digits, the vertical axis the second two digits. Clear (and somewhat predictable) patterns emerge from the dataset. A diagonal line of ‘heat’ from bottom left to top right reveals people choosing double digits (2323, 6868 etc). A strong horizontal line at the 19 point shows people using their birth year as a PIN code (1971, 1998 etc). And a large amount of heat in the bottom left shows how people commonly use their birthdate in a MM/DD or DD/MM format. The most common code in the set is 1234.

A quite knowledgeable student asked my opinion about generating DNS master zone files with templates yesterday, in particular how he should manage SOA serial number increments.

He seemed to be extremely happy when I showed him our dig lookup plugin with which he can query the current serial number and then increment:

{% set newserial = lookup("dig", zone, "qtype=SOA", "@127.0.0.1").split()[2] | int + 1 %}

(Time flies: it’s meanwhile ten years old, I see: jpmens.net/2015/02/20/a-new-dn )

@maxleibman hehe, if they are allowed to solve the problem that is something :-). It is much worse when they know how to fix it, but are not allowed.

I wonder if I might bother you for a bit of help. I have a number of podman containers for training sessions which are launched via systemd with a unit file containing

[Service]
MemoryMax=2G
ExecStart=/etc/ansinode %i

/etc/ansinode is a shell script which invokes podman-run passing it, amongst others, the option `--memory=2g`.

I'm trying to limit the amount of RAM users "see" in the container.

Neither the unit file setting nor podman-run options have any effect.

What am I doing incorrectly?

“If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax.” 👀 Protest banner targeting Jeff Bezos luxury wedding in Italy.

A large banner protest on a public square in Venice, Italy, staged in response to Jeff Bezos’ extravagant wedding. The banner features a massive portrait of Jeff Bezos laughing and the bold message: “IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.” Dozens of people surround the installation, taking photos and observing, highlighting the public discontent over wealth inequality and tax avoidance.

The president of the US tries to issue commands to airborne pilots of the Israeli airforce… via social media post.

Some day, when historians will attempt to describe our time to future generations, no one will believe them.

And no, money doesn't help. When companies like Google and Apple pay bug bounties but don't send a fix upstream and instead demand that the maintainers fix stuff for free but have to respect their arbitrary embargoes, meaning working in secret — that is wrong on so many levels.

If you find a bug, propose a fix. If you don't propose a fix, no bounty. And every bounty paid out should result in the same sum sent to the upstream project. That would be a good start.

Nick Wellnhofer: "I just stepped down as libxslt maintainer and it's unlikely that this project will ever be maintained again. It's even more unlikely with Google Project Zero, the best white-hat security researchers money can buy, breathing down the necks of volunteers."

In the olden days of Open Source and Free Software, bug reports would come as a fix attached to a problem description. Just sending a bug report and demanding a fix was seen as lazy and wrong.

👷 After 15 years of entrepreneurship and a few months of sabbatical I'm looking for a regular old job.

My ideal role would be primarily technical, aimed to dissect software to uncover vulnerabilities. Beyond bug mining I'd love to learn to mine better and make new kinds of pickaxes.
