@Lydie Not like on Windows. The UI supports 1x and 2x scales for low and high-resolution displays respectively. Beyond that you can render the display in higher resolution than the panel and then scale it down to achieve smaller UI, but at the cost of some image quality.

This has saved the entire ecosystem from a ton of headache, because nothing on the screen ever appears in the wrong size relative to other elements, which is common on Windows in my experience.

@wezm I should take some screenshots of my Mavericks Mac to do this comparison.

A comparison of four icons in the first row each set in rounded squares of blue, orange, red, and green, each with a different white glyph. In the second row are four black rounded squares.

Today, I wrote for 12 hours in what could have been 12 separate blog posts. But instead, it’s one comprehensive post that covers what I think about Apple design right now.

It’s long. And there’s audio.

Someone who works on YouTube needs to realize that bilingual people exist. For a while now the app insists in translating video titles from Portuguese to English (I use my devices in English). If I change the language to Portuguese, it then translates video titles from English to Portuguese. I just want to see the original content as it was posted by the creator. And now it's even auto-enabling AI dubbing 🤦🏻‍♂️ Give me a checkbox to turn this off, please!

@joesteel I will say, as a citizen of a country where karaoke is literally everywhere, using iPhones as microphones to sing is the feature I’m the most excited about.

Not that there’s that much else that’s possible to look forward to, mind you.

@stairjoke This style actually adheres to their guidelines. In one of the sessions they show how the Finder looks like with a list view and they basically do exactly this, because the progressive blur won’t work work with list headers.

Stickies is one of those icons they just want to keep making worse and worse.

They didn’t have to change it as nothing is sticking out of the squircle but I suppose they wanted to make the stickies out of glass instead of paper. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ mastodon.social/@BasicAppleGuy

This one puzzles me. The old icon wasn’t peeking out of the “squircle jail”, so hypothetically there was no reason to abandon the fun design with a stack of sticky notes.

The new icon is as generic as they come. No personality whatsoever.

I’m absolutely blown away by the response to this “alt Tahoe” mockup. Thanks to everyone who took some of their precious time to have a look, boost and write back.

Of course some of it is confirmation bias, but I think it’s clear the Liquid Glass design needs some more work, especially on the Mac.

@cdoncarroll Yeah true, if the sidebar really is just a transient overlay, then the floating design makes a ton of sense. I don’t spend that much time on iPad so I forgot this case exists 😅

@cdoncarroll That’s a very good question. I don’t immediately see why this couldn’t work for iPad too, especially in the “sidebar open” mode. You’re right in the sense that the floating sidebar feels more at home on iPad because it can transition into a tab bar, but I think the fact that pixels are “lost” around the sidebar hurts even more on such a small display. I’m sure there is some kind of a solution for the tab bar that makes it feel like a natural counterpart for the “drawer” sidebar.

Few more observations between and

I was a bummed to see despite the realism of Liquid Glass, other controls have been further flattened in Tahoe. Kind of a bummer because I was loving the direction controls were going in macOS Sequoia at least. They had thin hard shadows & some level of gradients. See the screenshot, esp. the Help button & the unchecked box.

Another thing is that the window control buttons have gotten a bit larger; from 12x12pts to 14x14pts.

@marioguzman I take issue with "no niin" being described as something with no real meaning and something to ignore.

It's literally *the* expression to rule them all. Works in all situations.

@flogehring Yeah I love me some full-length toolbar, but as I said in the post, I think Apple have pretty much moved on from that 🥲

@FormerlyStC @siracusa Figma, in their recent-ish redesign, introduced similar floating sidebars to big fanfare, but reversed course very soon – turns out designers actually hated them.

@lo_fye Yeah I loved this aspect in Panther & Tiger, also that the icons grew and shrunk as space allowed. I think in the recent Mac OS versions they’ve made it a bit more flexible what can be in which category but it’s not freeform. What I do appreciate about the current design is that I know where things like removable storage or servers will appear when I connect them, but I don’t think it was ever a problem before the categories.

@arquitetomovel What I’m calling for is more “usable” area for the content. If you place a book behind a piece of frosted glass, you can maybe see that it’s there, but you can’t read any of the text through the material. It’s the exact same thing here.

Tuomas Hämäläinen 🇺🇦tuomas_h

@seiz Yeah, this is one of those usability issues that I didn’t try to address. I also look back fondly to the beautiful Aqua scroll bars, but we’ve been living with transient scroll bars for a long time, since Mac OS X 10.7. Not ideal but not a disaster in my book.
