... These are all routine parts of modern life including maintaining flaky computer systems (let me tell you ...) and phones ...

It was not like this even 35 y ago. Travel agents handled travel complexity. There were no smartphones. Computers were very limited. There was no internet for most. By necessity everyday life was much simpler. Most people could cope with it.

Now most cannot cope.

This is the most important feature of our time. And nobody can talk about it.

@ai6yr One place I'd love to visit is Yazd, which is bordering on the desert and has some neat adaptive architecture for the desert environment:

@ai6yr The South of the country and the unpopulated desert in the middle sound like the worst - Tehran is going to be closer to what you see in SoCal, and the North along the Caspian Sea is temperate rain forest.

@ai6yr In addition to always being hot, Ahvaz often has some of the worst air quality in the world, as that area (close to Iraq) is where Iran's oil industry is.

Seems like a difficult place to live.

@DMCMarty I find this one is pretty chill, even when I need to tone down my time on the Twit firehose

Bought a TH-D74 immediately after passing my license. Used every feature on that radio and it got me into satellites.

First (and currently only) HF rig is a Xiegu G90. Been having lots of fun with a janky coil-loaded whip from my balcony, playing with all kinds of modes, contesting, learning CW, etc. Love that radio!

@ingalls A1
Vancouver, BC.

I’m chronically an engineer and have a history of messing with computers and radios, so ham radio is a good fit. I was meaning to get licensed for some time, get a callsign with my initials, and get that put onto a license plate (no joke).

I finally got licensed in 2017 as a gift to myself for dropping out of my PhD (after 7 years). Been having a blast with it, and I got the plate too!

@DMCMarty Do it! I take sabbaticals periodically.

@ai6yr Ya, people need an open mind. It’s definitely not a 1:1 Twit replacement, but as it’s own thing it has gotten pretty good (especially since events in November pushed more interesting people here).

As I stated before, the quality of content here harkens back to early Internet forums, vs the algorithm-driven firehose. Takes some work to make it good, but then again so did my Twit feed.

@ai6yr Here too, just interesting that nobody's doing it in the NL (since I guess there'll be a lot of AIS traffic there)

@ai6yr I have MarineTraffic open in another tab.

The NL doesn't seem to have AIS up on aprs.fi like we have around here

@Intel_Earth I found some of the Coast Guard aircraft going after it on FR24
