@cato When Microsoft introduced the XMLHttpRequest to webbrowsers in 2000? The alternative would have been that the previous security model (sites cannot do cross origin requests - with the exception of form submissions, navigation, remote content - and read the response) would have been invalidated, making all existing sites insecure.

@cato Yes, they could (and probably should) do this for APIs that do not use cookies.

@cato If Cross-Origin requests would be allowed by default, the web would be far more insecure than it is now.
