@smallsco Receiving now - thanks again!

2026-03-09

@smallsco Please, if you would - just got the ImageWriter working properly this evening. Thanks!

Oh, and if you've sent a print job to zone Pikes Peak over the last week, could I trouble you to send it again? Had a brain fart and didn't have the printer enabled, so I lost those first few print jobs (doh!) #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk

@maccellar Ooh - nice looking iBook!

I understand stressing over teardowns... opening up my PowerBook without destroying the case plastics got me sweating pretty hard...

2026-03-09

It’s working! Please disregard the bad cable management, that’s my next task…here’s my #MARCHintosh configuration:

- PowerBook 5300ce running System 7.6.1, AIR and Simple Spooler
- iMac G3 running Mac OS 9.2
- ImageWriter II printer

My MARCHintosh config , a PowerBook 5300ce, iMac G3 and ImageWriter II. And also a lot of cable management needing to be done. :-)

@_the_cloud That makes it official, I’m fully up on GlobalTalk! Now to explore!

@_the_cloud Doh! I figured it out... it helps to press the select button to enable the printer. Yeah, it's been a while since I worked with a dot matrix printer LOL. And I did indeed receive your print job, thanks!

2026-03-09

@_the_cloud It does indeed indicating “Printing”, but nothing actually came off the printer.

@_the_cloud Unfortunately I had restarted the spooler before you replied. I know for sure It indicated "spooled" but don't recall if it then said "printed". Printer turned on and paper loaded, and confirmed printing with a local print job. In the spooler I had it set to point to the printer port, so I switched it to the modem option... I think that's the direction you were wanting me to try? The Powerbook has a single shared printer/modem serial port, so I'm hoping this works. Any way you can try to send me another page, please? Thanks!

2026-03-09

@_the_cloud It looks like my Globaltalk file share is working perfectly (including the one on the adjacent iMac on the same EtherTalk network, yay!) but I'm having printing issues with SimpleSpooler. The log shows that print jobs were received, but nothing actually got printed. Any recommendations on where to begin troubleshooting? #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk

2026-03-08

Well, was going to jump back into #MARCHintosh activities again this evening, but the neighbor's house up the street caught fire. Fortunately, it sounds like no one's hurt, but a lot of public safety activity in the neighborhood tonight.

@europlus Awesome - thanks for the offer! Let me get MiniVNC loaded on the Powerbook and I'll give you a shout.

2026-03-03

@_the_cloud @europlus It looks like 1700 is available, I'll switch my LocalTalk zone to that and see if I can get that updated in the spreadsheet.

2026-03-03

@_the_cloud @europlus Oops, that might be at least part of the issue... my net number on the EtherTalk side is 1701, but it's 17 on the LocalTalk side. I'll get that fixed here in a few minutes.

2026-03-03

@thomasfuchs Oh, wow... that is absolutely sexy! With reel-to-reel, no less! I would be seriously tempted, too...

2026-03-03

@_the_cloud @europlus I'll take a second look at the spreadsheet... I think I picked unique net numbers? Very possible that I might have missed something, though. I have a habit of doing this stuff late in the evening, and could have easily overlooked something LOL

2026-03-03

@europlus @_the_cloud Hmmm... I was originally configured that way - the PowerBook and the ImageWriter were connected via PhoneNet, and AIR was running on the PowerBook. For some reason, AIR wouldn't start in that configuration.

2026-03-03

@pmcg Yep, it's a Powerbook 5300ce. The ImageWriter II does have the LocalTalk option card, so it is capable. The PowerBook and the ImageWriter were connected to each other via PhoneNet. @_the_cloud clued me in that LocalTalk and EtherTalk are an either/or proposition, so I'm trying his Simple Spooler software with the ImageWriter direct connected via serial to see if that makes a difference.

2026-03-03

@_the_cloud Checked this morning before going to work, saw in the log that it hit the spooler but it didn't make it to the printer. Will probably head downstairs shortly to troubleshoot.

2026-03-02

Well, I think I've gone as far tonight as I can... my brain is starting to fizzle out. I think I have the file share working, as well as the Imagewriter thanks to @_the_cloud recommending his Simple Spooler app to make it work.

If you have a chance, please feel free to drop by and give it a try, I'm at zone Pikes Peak at globaltalk.virtualoak.net. #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk
