I love fonts

I’ve been assuming that generative AI would democratise type design in extremely cumbersome scripts like CJK but actually you could just as easily end up in a situation where that tech is proprietary as foundries look for an edge. typo.social/@sajatype/11494211

@simoncozens @sajatype Recently the legal industry has been talking about this issue that low level jobs will disappear due to AI but that means there’s no pathway way to actually learning how to be a lawyer in a law firm and move up into senior roles.

2025-07-30

@arthurfontzarelli @klim Ahh that’s so true I didn’t even think about that. I guess they’d even be willing to make that profit even if it means destroying the market down the line

2025-07-30

@klim That’s the big question. Is there actually profit? I’m not sure. It’s unclear if there even is for the rest of AI at large

2025-07-30

@sajatype What’s CA?

2025-07-30

@simoncozens @sajatype I think everyone working on CJK fonts probably wants to reduce the labour hours and it may not be such a threat on their jobs. Maybe I’m wrong though. Whereas for Latin you’d actually start losing jobs.

@sajatype @w__h_ I found it fascinating that while Latin-based foundries are jealously guarding their fonts against AI training, Founder Type gave a free license of their whole catalogue on an AI-training-*only* basis to DeepVec2. (Different economic drivers and interests, of course.) That was a few years back now and Zhouhui Lian's lab has progressed the state of the art a lot since then. This is their latest, generated glyphs in red.

2025-07-30

@klim @sajatype Oh interesting

2025-07-29

@Multioculartype This one? youtu.be/doKy16zy17Y?feature=s looks like they’re just using AI for their image and campaign work

2025-07-29

@sajatype I just think it would hurt their business model as things are right now. It would only make sense if novel font generation actually got reliably good and then they were willing to alienate all their font suppliers.

2025-07-29

Really curious to know how AI generation of fonts is going in non-latin scripts.

2025-07-29

@sajatype Do licensing agreements with Monotype allow them to train AI's using fonts distributed by them?

2025-07-29

According to this piece on The Verge, Monotype isn't there but who knows when that could change.

Does anyone think Monotype is actually trying to pivot to using AI to generate fonts? If they are that would be supremely stupid.

2025-07-19

@eWalthert @jo @jenskutilek Ahhh of course thank you. I was trying to find that but couldn’t remember the keywords and thought it was a slightly different one 😅 completely slipped my mind.

2025-07-19

I wonder if anyone knows anything about the old default Cadsoft EAGLE fonts. It's been replaced since 2017 with something else:

Reddit thread @mightymaithy sent me today: "What does this character mean" reddit.com/r/fonts/comments/1l

2025-07-11

@razziatype @flaviazim Yep. It’s worth it. Brings down 4-5 days of kerning and proofing down to 1-2.

2025-07-10

@flaviazim Use KernOn?

2025-07-10

@simoncozens @eWalthert @sajatype I think people conflate a lot of things under the term of AI. As I understand it lots of things can use algorithm and even machine learning that isn’t directly feeding into the resource and content exploitation that the biggest AI companies are engaging in.
