Dutch is so weird. We add ‘je’ to a word as a diminutive, to make a concept smaller. ‘Stuk’ is piece, ‘stukje’ is small piece. So far so good.

But see the picture. It’s a peanut butter label that says that the jar contains ‘grote stukjes’, so: large small pieces.

Must be close to impossible to learn as a second language.

@matthew @piquant00 Just to be clear: while "beck" is indeed a shortening of "beckon," the phrase isn't and was never "beckon call." It is and was always "beck and call." Michael Quinion at World Wide Words has a great entry on it worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-bec1. and we talked about it on the radio show here waywordradio.org/beck-and-call

This year, I published #TheBlackAgendaBook.

I'm really proud of it and all the voices that spoke to issues impacting our country. I'm also indebted to so many for a successful debut. I want to thank anywhere that loans out or sells books, my conversation partners, and all the readers.

One way to support this book is to purchase it by and throughout #BlackHistoryMonth!

@wayword Some more data on call in vs. call out: I’ve lived in Charleston, SC for 18 years now (grew up in Ohio but most of my working life has been here in SC) and I’ve personally only ever used call out. Sometimes I say call out sick. Furthermore, I’ve mostly noticed my fellow coworkers using call out. And the management actually uses it as a noun; as in, “we have two call-outs today.”

We couldn't do it without you! Your donations make "A Way with Words." Show your support today. waywordradio.org/give-now Thank you!

A picture of a kitten. The kitten is pensive and looks out a window. In the lower left is the A Way with Words logo (a yellow circle containing the words "A Way with Words"). Everything is surrounded by a red Christmas motif. There are the words "We couldn't do it without you! Your donations make the show! Show your support today." Then there is a green "donate" button. In the upper right corner is a Christmas tree stamp. The background is red with white dots, resembling snow. Across the bottom is a Christmas garland of evergreen and red berries.
