WEB I18N GAP FIXED: Greek case conversion

WebKit now supports the following Greek specific behaviours for text-transform: uppercase:
- words that are all uppercase lose tonos
- for diphthongs with tonos on the first character the tonos is removed but a dialytika is added above the second character in the diphthong
- a disjunctive eta in a Greek sentence keeps its tonos diacritic

This behaviour is now interoperable across WebKit, Gecko, and Blink browsers.

WEB I18N GAP PROGRESS: Support for extra spacing between Chinese/Japanese and Western text

Safari 18.4 supports text-autospace:ideograph-alpha ideograph-numeric;

This is only a start, since other browsers don't support this CSS yet, and Safari still doesn't support the 'replace' value. However, this is the kind of property that you can apply to all text now, and as browsers improve it will make the text look better.

WEB I18N GAP FIXED: “Writing-modes sideways values not implemented”

With the release of Safari 18.4 all major desktop browsers now interoperably support the sideways-lr and sideways-rl values of CSS writing-mode.

This means it's now possible to properly display horizontal scripts in vertical arrangements, such as table headings.

This is a significant step forward, and turns many cells green in the language matrix! See w3.org/TR/latn-gap/#issue11_wr

NEW ARTICLE: How to make list markers stand upright in vertical text

w3.org/International/questions

In Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Mongolian vertically-set text it is normal for list counters to sit upright above the start of the list. This article describes how to use CSS for this, and what doesn't yet work.

WEB I18N GAP FIXED: “Glyphs for characters in other blocks incorrectly falling back to system font”

Adlam and N'Ko text is now rendered in all major browsers without the Arabic punctuation marks being displayed in a different font.

WEB I18N GAP FIXED: “Grapheme clusters fail to represent syllabic conjuncts in Bengali, Devanagari, and Gujarati”

Orthographic syllables involving a virama are now treated as a single grapheme cluster for Bengali, Devanagari, and Gujarati in the latest versions of the Gecko, Blink, and Webkit engines.

See w3.org/TR/deva-gap/#issue87_se

This also applies to Oriya, Telugu, and Malayalam.

WEB I18N GAP FIXED: “:dir lacks wide support”

When designing or adapting style sheets for languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, Dhivehi, Fula (Adlam), etc. the :dir() pseudo-class allows the content author to style right to left text differently in the same style sheet as other languages, significantly improving convenience.

This is now supported by Gecko, WebKit, and Blink engines.
