After moving to my new servers, I am testing/wiping some old HDDs. I have a couple that have failed SMART tests but they still pass physical tests, so I wiped them & will give them away with appropriate caveats. Single pass wipe, (all 0s) to a 1TB disk usually takes 2-3hrs. Except 1, which took an hour to get an ETA, which was originally 28h. It has been running for an indicated 21h, with 9:10 remaining. So I think that one actually is toast, but at least I know it's not holding any data.

Relevant details for my specific setup:
6.1.0-34-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.135-1 (2025-04-25) x86_64 GNU/Linux, Nvidia (proprietary) 575.51.03 for a Quadro P2200, and a Dell T340, Xeon E-2244G, PERC 330 that shows up as a BCM/LSI MegaRAID SAS-3 3008, OpenZFS. The search results for that DMAR error that clued me in on disabling virtualization makes it look like this has been an issue since 2022. Docker still works with virtualization disabled, I'm not running LXC containers or VMs

Yikes. Some combination of the Linux 6.1 kernel on Debian 12, Nvidia drivers, & the BIOS/chip-level virtualization extensions for PCI pass-through (VT-D) cause kernel panics that interrupt PCI comms in a way that causes filesystem corruption if your disks happen to be hanging off of a PCI card. Fortunately for me ZFS did its thing, but since Dell doesn't have a separate setting for VT-D I had to disable virtualization support entirely to fix this. Which fortunately I don't need on this machine.

TeenKids like the Orange Dreamsicle Monster Reserve energy drink flavor as an occasional treat, but most places here have recently stopped carrying it, so they tried this Reign version. Tastes about the same, but a 16oz can has *300mg* of caffeine, (Monster is "only" 150), so we shared the one can.

More soy toots: when you buy soy sauce look at the ingredient list and label.

If it has ‘hydrolyzed soy protein’, it’ll be roughly the same quality as ‘cheap Chinese restaurant takeout soy sauce packets’. Soy sauce made from chemical processes. It doesn’t taste good to me and is usually amped up with sugar.

If it just says ‘soy beans’, and the label says ‘naturally brewed’ or ‘naturally fermented’ or ‘first draw soy sauce’ it will be pretty good.

Public Service info from the volunteer chief archivist at datamuseum.dk:

NEVER use flash-based storage for archival purposes.

Not CF, not SD, not USB-sticks, not SSD, not NVME, nor any other flash-technology based storage media.

Flash is simply not a stable storage mechanism: Just like Dynamic RAM it will eventually forget your bits.

Unfortunately there are no good choices for long term data storage, but flash is a particular bad choice.

AI vulnerability/bug founds and reports is a huge problem. Curl has banned the use of AI-generated submissions via HackerOne because none of it made any sense, and is a waste of resources and time. Since Star Wars day falls on a Sunday this year, thought it appropriate to reshare this adaptation enabling those who may be in church today to enjoy both observations.

A picture of Darth Vader in the Washington National Cathedral, captioned:
May 4th be with you,
and also with youOur father, who art in Death Star, Vader be thy name.
The empire come, beat the Rebel scum.
On Alderaan as it is in Tatooine.
Give us this sol, our daily empire ration
And lead us not to the light side for they have no cookies.
For thine is the empire, the star destroyer and the Galaxy, forever. Yavin
Alternate verse, courtesy Colin Taylor:
Our father, who art in Death Star, Vader be thy name.
Thy Empire come, thy will be done on Hoth as it is on Bespin.
Give us this day our daily cookie, and Force-choke us when we fail, as we Force-choke those who fail us. Lead us straight into temptation, and deliver us to evil. For thine is the Empire, and the Force, and the Galaxy; for ever and ever. Yavin.

Music nerd problems: I'm at my freshman's guitar concert where they do modern music. they have added keyboard on two songs, and in both cases, the keyboard is at least a quarter tone out of tune with all of the guitars. They use electronic tuners so the only thing I can think of is that the keyboard at some point was tuned to something other than standard concert pitch and they don't realize it. It was almost physically painful.
