We would be greatful if you could amplify our voice & let your followers know that the Auschwitz Memorial is present in #fediverse: @auschwitzmuseum

Every day we commemorate the victims & educate about the tragic human history of #Auschwitz.

Auschwitz is a place that shows where hatred, antisemitism and contempt for a fellow man led people decades ago.

It is also a place where we should reflect on our individual and collective responsibility for the world we live in.

The Arbeit macht frei gate to the former Auschwitz I camp. The barbed wire fences and kitchen building on the right are visible. A foggy day.

@jannem @vsoch When running `module load ___`, the environment variable $SINGULARITY_CONTAINER gets defined, giving me exactly what I want to programmatically generate submit files with minimal effort i.e. not copying & pasting.

@histoftech Interesting to note that the % of CS undergrads in the UK who are women (from the UK) has been on the slow decline over the past decade.

its probably not a big deal that giant corporations are building a world where programming the computer sitting in front of you is impossible without access to giant centralized data centers and subscriptions to centralized services this is probably what progress looks like probably

@alexprichard @dmw Remember, what made Twitter valuable were journalists and Black people. And the right doesn't want to talk to itself, it wants to troll those it hates. So as the former cut-back/leave, the latter is left with no one to harass but itself. Which means bizarre incongruous right-wing factionalism breaking out constantly. Again making them look really really weird. And not the good kinda weird.

@dmw @alexprichard While no doubt the platform will continue to sink into its own toxic swamp and ruin the last vestiges of its value, I am less anxious about its demise than y'all. As it lurches rightward it's going to get both far weirder and also more boring. And only the most myopic will believe a platform oozing with permanently online very divorced dad energy is representative of the wider public.

Gender is a lot like operating systems. People always assume you use one of the two big proprietary ones and if you don't, you're gonna have to deal with a lot of confusion and compatibility issues. On the plus side you get a lot more customisability and don't have to care about bullshit policies of the proprietary options.

🚨 New week, new blog post! 🚨

A long read reflecting on the 2023 Marking & Assessment Boycott (MAB), as well as the conditions that make for a successful boycott. One to ponder over with a beverage of your choice!

Spoiler alert: we need more deep, long-term, and local organising, and we need to tackle the fundamental issues of membership density and member engagement.

Reminder about Mastodon "private" messages. Aside from not being end-end-encrypted (and so visible to instance administrators), they CC anyone @-mentioned ANYWHERE in the body of the message (not just those listed at the start).

They are now called "private mentions" rather than "private messages", but if you don't fully understand the semantics, this behavior may be unexpected and/or cause unpleasant side effects.

Truly impressive the enormity of the dipshits pushing their business acumen and mastery of capital suddenly finding out businesses have to generate money and they haven’t been fucking doing it this whole time and yet still expect us to peel their grapes for their presence.

First time since the start of the pandemic where I momentarily stopped following my own protocols & first time I got #COVID19 My symptoms seem to be gone now thankfully, but even after getting the "mild" kind, I don't understand how people can be so nonchalant about this disease.

And this is literally 2 weeks after I got the 4th booster that's available in the US. I can imagine how it damages the organs, so many different things that people can experience.

The agreement is big news for our pensions; but there’s also a more immediate effect: Lower pension contributions mean higher net pay—for a typical postdoc, that could mean about £100/month extra in the bank from January!

Common theme in my troubleshooting approaches that succeed others, is I went deeper on the basic assumptions.

The GUI interface says both policies are the same, but one works and the other doesn’t? You don’t know what’s going on?

Let’s text-compare the raw XML behind it.
