@sally i torrent a bunch of shit on my home server. im not in any private trackers so the only torrents with good seeders are usually compressed to 2gb at 1080p. thats good enough, but also i do like better quality for things i really enjoy, i want proper surround sound and HDR. the $20 entry fee is a lot for every random movie, but cheap for a film i know i love and will rewatch a thousand times.

but does this matter? in 2005 it was still important that you could use your device to play movies. blu rays nowadays are a more hobbyist special thing. the former dvd crowd is now happy with the software that comes with the tv, and dont have multiple boxes of electronics in the cabinet underneath (unless its an old setup).
game consoles used to be one of those boxes, but now theyre something different

playing blu rays on ps5 is a splendid experience vs on xbox.
you have to download a movie player app, which works well but has really low ratings, and the system doesnt read the disc's title to the home screen. im pretty sure it also sleeps the controller while the movie is playing, so you have to wait 5 seconds before you can pause it.
on ps5 it has none of these issues, you just pop it in and it says "ah yes blade runner final cut 4k hdr heres your movie" and everything just works.
