@helge if I'm running a separate HTTP server for every application, a lot of the other benefits of CGI evaporate, leaving me back at "well, I may as well just embed the backend HTTP server in the application".

2025-07-06

@helge the thing that killed CGI for me many moons ago is the difficulty of spawning processes running under different UIDs from the webserver.

@faulteh never underestimate the power of motivation.

2025-07-04

@fesshole it's an older meme, sir, but it checks out.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat so you're saying that if MLP had ghost sex, it could be the basis for a system of law?

2025-07-04

@craige the size of the table that I wanted to flip when I read that story could be seen from the moon. Then I read the claim that this box o' GPUs was apparently going to create 100+ full-time jobs, and also that we don't even have enough power to run the industry we already have, and I am ready to throw things.

So frustrating, yet so utterly predictable, that politicians and media have completely bought the bullshit.

@elvith no, for many years it was cocaine.

Anybody who has been around programmers for more than five minutes should not be surprised that many of them are enthusiastically adopting a tool that is harmful, destroying industries, sabotaging education, and hindering the energy transition because they feel it's giving them a moderate advantage

@tychotithonus by virtue of the massive amount of money that Google pays them to be an ablative antitrust shield, Mozilla has always been afflicted by a variant of the Resource Curse (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resour), and as such has never had to learn how to be a functional business. Hence it's not surprising that when they give it a (lackluster) try, they're not very good at it.

Are you looking to #fedihire an experienced Ruby and/or Rust developer, and/or a Linux greybeard, with strong infosec credentials and a penchant for crypto(graphy!), on a remote (~UTC+10) part-time contract basis? If so, I'm your ideal candidate. Please get in touch (PM or email to matt@hezmatt.org).

@mikaeleiman popping a bunch of gish gallop grifters' heads on pikes doesn't seem like a lose-lose proposition.

@zackwhittaker "fascists get a lesson in the Streisand effect" is my new favourite content.

@emory the hackeroni leaderboard is probably judged on volume, not quality, so I'm not surprised.

the fact that the Internet Archive got into bigger trouble for lending books they paid for than Facebook did for reproducing books they pirated tells you everything you need to know about copyright.

@dave it sounds like you're encountering a strange behaviour I've seen from allistics, which I call "subtexting", where they hallucinate that you said something you didn't, and then act accordingly, usually to the detriment of everyone. I agree that it is extremely perplexing behaviour.

@wholesomememes me: *slaps roof of my psyche* "this baby can fit so much personal growth!"

@farbel look at the other replies.

@fesshole you've got... *something*.

@furrfu languages like python and ruby are just pretending to be helpful, by not mentioning all the annoying little details you missed until runtime, when everything catches fire.
