Pleased to announce a new #Jepsen report on Datomic Pro 1.0.7075. Datomic is an unusual system in many ways. Temporal! Immutable! Datalog! Strong Session Serializable*! We found that Datomic appears to offer Strong Session Serializable inter-transaction semantics, up to Strong Serializable when using sync or update transactions. However, *within* a transaction, updates appear as if executed concurrently, rather than sequentially. We hope you enjoy the report. 😃
Jepsen (a small consultancy focused on #distributed #systems safety) released their analysis of #Datomic safety and correctness - and concluded:
We found no behavior which violated Datomic’s core safety claims ... Indeed, we believe Datomic’s inter-transaction safety properties are stronger than promised. https://jepsen.io/analyses/datomic-pro-1.0.7075
If you've never mended your own clothes I can very much recommend trying it. It feels very satisfying and empowering. As with anything you'll get better with practice, but it's also not brain surgery, it's pretty easy to get started.
I posted the @owa end-of-year update [1] yesterday, but this bit really got me.

I spent five months trying to get my HP printer un-region-locked so I could use my very expensive HP ink cartridges. The experience changed me.

Being an omnivorous technology generalist is punishing to start out as and lasts for years, but becomes incredibly valuable later. That's something I wish I could have told the prior me.
Come to understand: Being a generalist is not about "lacking experience to call yourself an expert." Touching on innumerable disciplines is itself a crucial skill that lets you operate in the real world with huge autonomy. Just know your limits. Most problems don't need specialists. Generalists are the ones that ***know when to call in the specialists and give them what they need***.
There's a housing crisis in many cities. But cars can park free. Why not claim public street-space for those who need it? If you disguise your shelter as a polluting, duly-licensed private vehicle, like artist Michael Rakowitz did...
...the authorities should be fine with it.

"Pre-pandemic,~1% of all jobs posted on LinkedIn were remote. As of today, that number is ~14%...but that's not the fascinating part. What's fascinating is north of 50% of all job applications on a daily basis on LinkedIn go to that 14% of remote jobs"
