God bless PG&E killing our power even before we’ve seen even a fucking hint of inclement weather.

I will be doing this move at the end of today, PST. So I'd give it 8h or so.

Another option, should you be over there, is my Bluesky, which is just my domain name (@xodium.net)

As part of this I wiped my .social account and am going to be moving everything over there:

PSA: I'm probably going to be moving instances soon, unless something changes in the meantime. Tentatively, I'm going to mastodon.social, so if you have them blocked for whatever reason, well, I bid you farewell, no hard feelings.

I just don't see another instance I can jive with and I'd rather not crap up a small instance with my antics + I don't want to join a themed instance when I'm going to be talking about more than, well, that theme.

Once more:

In discourse over what’s going to happen in the next few years in the US, please don’t forget disabled folk dependent on Medicare, especially with the news today.

We can’t even really leave the country if shit gets bad, either. We kinda are just stuck here and left to slowly rot and/or die if things go as bad as they look.

So please.

Keep us in your thoughts.

the reason mastodon isn't "winning" over bluesky is that mastodon is like a linux help desk whereas bluesky is like a furry porn bar and people will use the furry porn bar over the linux help desk

One of the things that warms my heart re: the twitter exodus is it’s finally clicking that the only way to deal with fascists is to block them and never, ever engage.

They need to be ostracized from society and not allowed back in.

Oh, voted for Trump? I don’t care why. I’m throwing you across that bridge and burning it.

Gods forbid you want back in you are going to have to do all the goddamn soul searching in the world and truly commit yourself to making whole the people you fucked over.

@bynkii definitely living up to the “Mastodon is social media Linux” vibes for sure. With all the energy of a Linux evangelist screaming at Windows users for not wanting anything to do with Linux.

@aradiogurl it’s not going away per se, mostly that carriers are moving allocation away from it and over to 5G. LTE is still around, it’s just kind of a shadow of what it used to be, at least over here.

@sadmac356 @mos_8502 …or how you can’t see all activity on a post due to the federated nature.

But yeah. That’s one of the things I don’t like about this system. Defederation in my eyes should only be a last resort option against problematic/fascist instances, not just ones run by people you don’t like/pissed you off/etc.

Instance blocking should be done on a user level in most cases. Don’t break shit for your users because you got a stick up your ass.

@mos_8502 addendum: I think when/if Bluesky does full federation a lot of success is going to depend on how well they abstract that from the end user. If they can abstract it well such that people who don’t want to interact with it don’t ever see it, that’ll be awesome.

The way Mastodon does it has improved but still feels messy.

I really hope ATproto is designed better in this regard.

@mos_8502 plus there seem to be people who legitimately think federation is a selling point to normies and it’s just…guys, normal users don’t give one single shit about federation and the one normal person I use as a benchmark thought I was inviting her to a gathering of Trek nerds when explaining it.

Much like desktop Linux it feels like some here would rather scream at the normies than stop and comprehend why they don’t want to be here.

I decided to just kick my main website back over to blogger and just keep it to, well, certain subjects.

As such, here's a post I wrote inspired by recent interactions on here: xodium.net/2024/11/on-windows-

@wotsac @thomholwerda I feel like both Windows and Mac users ate good that year…SL and W7 both feel like “this was the last time this OS was truly great, before the decline started”.

I wish we could go back, I really do.

@aradiogurl did a similar thing earlier this year, moved girlfriend from 11 to 15. Mostly because she was going to be leaving for an MVNO and would no longer be able to finance phone upgrades so she had to do it (via Apple) before she left.

The 11 was a good phone but yeah. It already had a battery replacement and the new one (Apple OEM!) had already worn out after a year. Plus around here the carriers are abandoning LTE, it feels like. :(

@billgoats oh these mice are awesome, especially for retro. They can be converted to PS/2 with a passive adapter.

I’ve got one on my retro desk because they’ll work with pretty much any Mac I throw at it (USB) and every Windows machine I have with a PS/2 port.

Shame the plastics are brittle (which won’t matter unless you take it apart!)

@thomholwerda agreed, and I know some would say 2011 is too new but personally I think that’s where a line was drawn because 2011 was when Apple began the yearly update cadence for OS X (and I’d argue it was at that point the downhill trajectory for software quality really accelerated but I’m just being grumpy)

Lion really did begin setting the groundwork for macOS going forward, now that you think about it…

@phf you can have your preferences.

Just don’t tell people that theirs are invalid because of what you like.
