There is apparently a famous quote by Brené Brown:
"Empathy is simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘you are not alone’"
I'm trying to find the right balance in empathy, where I'm emotionally connecting, without losing connection with my own state of mind, nor being overwhelmed with the other's feelings.
I'm finding the balancing part difficult.
Currently I either fully engage, which usually means I end up working through the emotions when the other person has already moved on (and is probably sleeping comfortably, because I often end up doing this at night).
The other mode I have is to not engage, which means I can still listen, communicate and be present, but I'm depending on cognition and problem-solving to not go into overwhelm.
From experience and feedback, I know I then come across as distant, uninterested, or even worse: mansplaining.
Writing it down like this, the overwhelm that I often experience (and have come to expect) with the "emotionally connecting" part of empathy, is probably what is is causing most of my difficulties. Finding a way to deal with that by and for myself is proving an interesting challenge...

Cross-Post: Queen’s University Special U.S. Doctoral Recruitment Initiative
Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, offers 20 scholarships of at least CAD $40,000/year for four years to doctoral students whose offers from top U.S. schools have been rescinded or who are reconsidering their acceptance to a US school for the 2025/26 academic year. The application is straightforward: find someone willing to supervise you, show your letter of acceptance to a US institution, and apply. For more information see https://www.queensu.ca/grad-postdoc/graduate-studies/international-students/queens-special-us-doctoral-recruitment-initiative
There are lots of opportunities in Canada if you have medical credentials although getting permission to use them can be a bit of work.

Anyone know of a #Mastodon #BlueSky #crosspost service similar to what @moaparty did for twitter/mastodon?
Basically, I don't want to use a separate app. I'd like to configure something that will auto-crosspost.
