I have been staring at a Bachmann HO Daylight set on amazon for days now...

Probably not the best set to get back in to the hobby with, partially because the track it comes with is steel.

What I *should* do (i want roadbed track for ease of setup for a quick starter layout) is get a mid range DC controller and a cheap Walthers locomotive then some nickel silver track to make a simple oval with a branch line. The problem with this is that is nearly triples the cost over one of the Bachmann sets, and I don't end up with any rolling stock. On the other hand, It lets me eventually buy a much better 4449/Daylight (with dcc and sound) when I set up a permanent layout. (I live a few miles from where 4449 is kept, and I have childhood memories of seeing 4449 that give it sentimental value as a locomotive)
