MANILA, Philippines – Renee Nicole Good, who was shot and killed by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on January 7, was an award-winning poet.

Good received her Creative Writing degree from the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2020, as a student, she won an undergraduate poetry prize from the university’s English department for her piece, “On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs.”

The poem sees the mother of three dive deep into existential inquiry, life, and death. Back then, judges for the competition had praised Good for her use of imagery and for being able to seamlessly weave in a vast range of memories to get her point across.

“What is the origin story of ‘want;’ the urgency of belief and nonbelief? the first line the poet asks. Through specificity of image and associative leaps from piece to piece emerges a text that in itself becomes a sacred text, a meditation that leads the reader into the unknown,” the judges wrote about her piece.

Renee Nicole Good: Who was the woman shot dead by US immigration agents in Minnesota?

fed.brid.gy/r/https://www.rapp

MANILA, Philippines – Renee Nicole Good was shot dead by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 7.

The 37-year-old was killed just a few blocks away from where she was living with her partner in the Twin Cities.

What went down

Between rows of houses, ICE agents had pulled over in the middle of the street to ask Good to step out of her Honda SUV partially blocking the road. She reversed the car with its window down, and just a few seconds later, an ICE agent began to fire shots repeatedly.

She appeared to have lost control of the vehicle, and eventually crashed into a utility pole and other parked cars in the area. She was killed.

The Trump administration claimed that the shooting was a mere act of self-defense — adding that she allegedly attempted to use her car as a weapon.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, however, was quick to deny this. He asserted that it was just another one of the US government’s attempts at promoting their “garbage narrative,” a conclusion he came to after watching the viral footage of Good’s encounter with the ICE agent.

WASHINGTON, USA – At 4:21 on Saturday morning, President Donald Trump sent a message on his Truth Social platform: the United States had carried out a daring mission to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

The action came as a surprise, but according to sources familiar with the matter, planning for one of the most complex US operations in recent memory had been in the works for months and included detailed rehearsals.

Elite US troops, including the Army’s Delta Force, created an exact replica of Maduro’s safe house and practiced how they would enter the strongly fortified residence.

The CIA had a small team on the ground starting in August who were able to provide insight into Maduro’s pattern of life that made grabbing him seamless, according to one source familiar with the matter.

Two other sources told Reuters the intelligence agency also had an asset close to Maduro who would monitor his movements and was poised to pinpoint his exact location as the operation unfolded.

With the pieces in place, Trump approved the operation four days ago, but military and intelligence planners suggested he wait for better weather and less cloud cover. At 10:46 pm EST on Friday, Trump gave the final go ahead for what would be known as Operation Absolute Resolve, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine told reporters.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was in a New York detention center on Sunday, January 4, after President Donald Trump ordered an audacious US raid to capture the South American leader and take control of the country and its vast oil reserves.

As part of the dramatic operation early on Saturday, January 3, that knocked out electricity in parts of Caracas and included strikes on military installations, US Special Forces seized Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and transported them via helicopter to a US Navy ship offshore before flying them to the US.

“We will run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,” Trump told a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

For months, his administration criticized Maduro, 63, over what it called his involvement in shipping drugs to the US. It ramped up pressure with a massive military build-up in the Caribbean and a series of deadly missile attacks on alleged drug-running boats.

Potential power vaccum in Venezuela

While many Western allies oppose Maduro and say he stole Venezuela’s 2024 election, Trump’s boasts about controlling the nation and exploiting its oil revived painful memories of past US interventions in Latin America, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

US attack on Venezuela a ‘reality check’ for PH-US alliance, says De Lima

MANILA, Philippines – The United States, a treaty ally of the Philippines, risks undermining Manila’s moral authority in opposing foreign aggression after Washington’s attack on Venezuela, several groups warned.

Mamayang Liberal Representative Leila de Lima said the attack on Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro marked a regression of the United States into an “aggressor state,” placing it alongside China, Russia, and Israel in undermining the rules-based international order.

“This serves as a reality check on our reliance on the United States for moral leadership in the world stage and as an ally for regional security and a rules-based international order,” she said in a statement on Sunday, January 4.

“It throws the global order back to a barbaric ‘might makes right’ regime,” De Lima said, arguing that such actions discard eight decades of progress achieved since the founding of the United Nations after World War II.

De Lima said US aggression weakens the moral foundation of international opposition to other conflicts and territorial disputes, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China’
