Mbin does not yet support private mentions like Mastodon and Misskey (I suppose) use. Lemmy invented a new way to do it and that one we support. (It actually uses a custom ActivityPub type ChatMessage)

The badges thing was a very non complete feature. We removed the half baked functionality that existed to avoid confusion

You're absolutely right about that... At least adding a warning or better yet stopping people from posting to it entirely should be done...

Getting a notification about it is also absolutely doable.
