The Ontario Hospital Association issued a statement Tuesday, warning of an alarming increase in cases, which have now hit a three-year high.

The group said last week, patients with flu were up 150 per cent, hospital admissions grew by 84 per cent, and the number of people in intensive care hit 127 per cent.

The Ontario Medical Association released the results of an online survey of physicians on Wednesday that found 51 per cent of specialists and 52 per cent of primary care doctors identified themselves as approaching retirement age and either thinking of or planning to hang up their stethoscopes within five years.

At the same time, the OMA, which represents physicians across the province, shared the findings of a survey of medical students that showed 42 per cent were interested in family medicine.

However, only half of those wanted to provide the type of office-based, cradle-to-grave primary care that is in short supply across the country.

“When you see the foundation of medical care crumbling, then we know the whole health care system is in trouble,” said David Barber, a family doctor in Kingston and chair of the OMA’s section on general and family practice. “These new numbers that we’re seeing, they’re especially disturbing because it’s really at both ends of the age spectrum.”

While other provinces have implemented similar residency policies, Atlin said they have taken more inclusive approaches. New Brunswick, for example, has restricted its international medical graduate residency streams to those with a “proven connection” to the province by requiring at least six months of having lived in the province.

“This interpretation of who is an Ontarian excludes immigrant physicians in Ontario who are permanent residents, or Canadian citizens, from a fair chance to compete for the designated IMG residency positions,” she said. “Our health care system loses out on the chance to benefit from their much-needed skills and experience.”

Lee Fairclough, the Liberals’ hospitals critic and a former hospital president, said labour costs are the majority of hospital spending, which leaves them little wiggle room.

“What are our other options? Continuing to reduce the quality of the food?” she said in an interview.

“The other options are look for other revenue sources, which is, again, do you keep increasing parking? With most hospitals, that’s not your first choice. We know that that affects patients’ pocketbooks.”

Hospitals are managing as tightly as they can and the government needs to step up with more funding, Fairclough said.
