@rooster a previous boss used to call us "cats and kittens," which totally worked for her personality but a) not everyone can pull that off, and b) I spent way too much time thinking about who was categorized as cats vs. who was a kitten. 100% would answer to "sup nerds."

@edross not rational, but definitely natural. I had a very bad experience with a certain restaurant 15 years ago and still haven't gone back, even though logically there is no way they are using the same stock of ingredients as they did then. That stuff gets encoded as "danger!!!" pretty strongly.

@MaryAustinBooks we got shutters on 100% of our windows for this reason. Even tucking that part away, they would always find creative ways to climb and get to it!

@AppleFanboy not sure how it works with the crossover with Southern Fried (if people attend a mix of both?), but here it's all VCF, and the SW location has a ton of retired engineers with really unique stories, so we're lucky.

@loriemerson @rose_alibi speaking of, EFF just published an article on the topic as well: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/06/keeping-web-under-weight-ai-crawlers. The Cloudflare option (which has a free tier) and other similar solutions are examples of the CDN option, which is distinct from robots.txt and more effective, as it can actually prevent the page from being served to bad actors. There are enough major orgs encountering their sites being slammed that this is getting more and more attention, which hopefully leads to meaningful change.
