Born this day in 1919, a great American hero, Fred Korematsu.
In 1942 President Roosevelt ordered the removal of persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast of the US to internment camps. 120,000 Japanese-Americans were forced to leave their homes, businesses, and possessions, and live in the camps indefinitely. The internment legally lasted until 1944, with some people having to remain until 1946.
Korematsu refused to comply and became a fugitive. His lawsuit against the government went to the U.S. Supreme Court. In _Korematsu v. United States_ the Supreme Court held that the exile of Japanese-Americans was *legal*. (In another opinion the same day it was held that the internment itself was _not_ legal.)
The _Korematsu_ decision is widely regarded as one of the worst Supreme Court decisions of the last hundred years.
The picture below shows an announcement of the relocation from San Francisco.
The thing that always strikes me when I read this is the phrase “All Japanese persons, both alien and non-alien…”. Who exactly is meant by"non-alien"? A more usual phrase would be "citizen". The bureaucratese language has obscured the citizenship of these American citizens, linguistically stripping them of all legitimacy. These citizens do not even rise to the the status of “aliens”.
