NASA’s Hubble Spots Runaway Black Hole Devouring a Star 600 Million Light-Years From Earth
By Ryan Whalen·May 9, 2025

A traveling black hole stalking the cosmos for stellar prey recently revealed itself to NASA telescopes in a tidal disruption event , shredding and swallowing a star in a radioactive burst.
With its brilliant flash, the TDE AT2024tvd lit up several observatories, including NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-Ray Observatory, and the NRAO Very Large Array. The TDE event took place 600 million light-years from Earth, allowing astronomers a new glimpse at black hole physics to be published in a future issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Initially, as the marauding black hole moved through the universe, it was detectable only through gravitational lensing—an effect caused by the black hole’s gravity distorting visible light in a way astronomers could observe.
Eventually, as the black hole encounters a star, its immense gravity pulls the stellar object inward. That intense gravitational force overwhelms the star, spaghettifying it, with some of the remnants forming a bright accretion disc around the black hole’s edge and a stream of electromagnetic radiation pouring out. Shocks and outflows from the accretion disc generate extreme temperatures, producing ultraviolet and visible light emissions.

Black holes are typically found at the centers of their galaxies, but this roaming void in space was the first observed offset from its galaxy, out of the roughly 100 tidal disruption events (TDEs) on record. Intriguingly, the host galaxy already contains a supermassive black hole at its center. The distance between the TDE and the galaxy’s central black hole was only a tenth of the distance from Earth to the Milky Way’s black hole—about 2,600 light-years.
The central black hole in the TDE’s galaxy is larger than the wandering one, and ..

The central black hole in the TDE’s galaxy is larger than the wandering one, and surprisingly, the two have not gravitationally bonded as a binary pair. Yet that could eventually change, with the roaming black hole possibly merging with the larger central black hole in the future.

“AT2024tvd is the first offset TDE captured by optical sky surveys, and it opens up the entire possibility of uncovering this elusive population of wandering black holes with future sky surveys,” said lead author Yuhan Yao of the University of California at Berkeley. “Right now, theorists haven’t given much attention to offset TDEs. “I think this discovery will motivate scientists to look for more examples of this type of event.”
The wandering black hole only becomes visible every tens of thousands of years—each time it consumes a star.

@solarisfire I don't honestly think that the Papal Conclave burning pieces of paper really amounts to much in the grand scheme of things. Its not like this has been happening every hour of every day for centuries. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the message you sent urging the Conclave not to burn paper used more carbon than the actual bonfire will. Just saying, might want to pick the battles that are worth winning ;)

@morandi I am sorry for what you endured, there is nothing that will ever return the innocence that you lost. I hope those that abused your childhood and humanity burn for their sins. They are a blight on the Earth for whom there is no reform possible.

2025-04-21

@morandi Francis took over the Papacy in the wake of the Molestation Scandal that rocked the Catholic Church. He openly condemned the actions (and inaction) of his predecessors and the Cardinals that allowed the actions you speak of to go on for so long. He actively cleansed The Church of Biships and Cardinals that rebelled against his efforts to help the church heal. He established new Catholic law and practices to protect children, eliminated the pontifical secret in relation to cases of abuse (all abuse, not just sexual) to make it easier for the Church to work with law enforcement. To categorize it as "no one cries for them" and to demonize who was quite possibly the most honorable and noble Pope in centuries because of a scandal that he inherited is dis-ingenious at best, irresponsible and ill-informed at worst.

I am not a practicing Christian, but I believe myself to be a man of upstanding moral compass. I can understand the contempt against the Catholic church, especially in the wake of the horrors that came to light, but maybe don't take it out on the one man in the entire dang world that actually seemed to care about humanity and was in a position of power to try to help the world heal.

2025-04-21

No matter your personal beliefs, no one can argue that Pope Francis was a man of the people. He served to restore a shred of hope in humanity in this world. A man of the cloth, uncorrupted by the power that the Vatican holds over the world. The world lost a good one today.

#RIPPopeFrancis

CVE funding is apparently -now- being renewed. (But see updated blog post for an update on why I'm not optimistic.)

I’m not alone in having strong feelings, and I want to talk about some of the original use cases that informed us as we set up the system. (You might also enjoy my thoughts on 25 Years of CVE for some context.) Those included comparing between vulnerability posts. It’s a lot of work to decide if two vulns are the same. Tagging both with a name was an important use case in 1997, and one that I got to revisit around 2010 when I was doing work to understand how malware got into PCs. Most of the attacks in exploit kits were not CVE-labeled. So deciding what they were was hours per vuln, with a high failure rate, versus minutes when they had a CVE assigned.

CVE achieved public good status exceptionally quickly, in part because of support from thoughtful leaders like Tony Sager while he was at NSA. Finding support from outside the government was, as I recall, harder because MITRE is Congressionally chartered and has difficulty taking money from anyone but the US Government.

There are other used cases, and I want to mention them because I was talking in private to friends, and they weren’t aware of these. All vendor names are used as examples.

  • Did redhat fix this python bug or do we need to find a patch is way easier with cves.
  • Did Apple fix this OpenSSL bug after getting version locked to OpenSSL .9.8?
  • Having a name lets you discuss “did Microsoft fix this yet?” and if there’s a tool that tests it, you can cross-check the bug, the proof of concept, and the patch.
  • Having an authoritative public timetable, including issuance, helped everyone understand when a vendor was slow-rolling a fix.
