@repost @techlore If power were cut and you didn't have a battery, then your (encrypted) data will be encrypted at-rest, of course. But BusKill would not trigger.
It took ~6 seconds for the BusKill self-destruct trigger to wipe the FDE private keys (and shutdown) during our forensic test.
https://www.buskill.in/luks-self-destruct/
If power cut vectors are a risk for you, we recommend having a battery (eg a laptop) with at least 1 minute of capacity.
> Or maybe that would take too much time and defeats the purpose of the cable in the first place.
I think the best way to do this would be to upload encrypted archive of documents before, and then just quickly upload a decryption key at the time of the trigger.
You might want to look into https://killcord.io/
@Nuldorv @techlore Currently custom scripts are only available for Linux users.

This is how the self-destruct trigger is implemented
To protect at-risk folks like journalists working in oppressive countries
The cable is connected to your body via a carabiner clipped to your belt. The other end plugs into the computer. There's a magnetic breakaway in the middle. If the connection is severed, the app triggers.
Video explanation: https://docs.buskill.in/buskill-app/en/stable/introduction/what.html
Encryption is a prerequisite to BusKill being useful, yes. But encryption won't help if someone steals your laptop while you're working on encrypted data.
@joeturner@mas.to @techlore
By default, BusKill does nothing when the cable disconnects. To make it lock (or shutdown) on disconnect, you have to first "arm" the cable by pressing a giant "arm" button in the app
https://docs.buskill.in/buskill-app/en/stable/software_usr/gui.html
If you want to disable it, just press the button again to "disarm" it
@joeturner@mas.to @techlore
It works on Linux, Windows, and MacOS
Our 3 releases are self-contained apps (bundled with all dependencies)
We don't sell a USB-C version, but you can build one yourself or just use an adapter
Journalists, activists, whistleblowers, human rights workers, crypto-traders, travelers working in cafes/coworking spaces, etc
$99 for the kit. $59 for the cable. Or you can make one yourself
Meet BusKill, a Dead Man Switch that can shut down (or even wipe!) your computer if removed from your body. I'm currently reviewing the product and would love to answer any questions you leave below for the review.
