A Minneapolis-based mutual aid collective just released the first in what they are hoping will become a series of instructional zines for salvaging building materials and making useful things for communally self-sufficient survival as climate catastrophe unfolds.

Today we're sharing the late Will Steffen's recent (2021) presentation to us on the #Anthropocene to honour his life's work, and the clear, calm, cogent style that epitomised his efforts to communicate his science to people everywhere. Vale Will. youtube.com/watch?v=HvD0TgE34H

This is absolutely massive news
#OpenAccess

A screenshot of text that reads "Major new opportunities for Open Access publishing, with no author's fees. Our library has signed new agreements with major publishers so that ANU-based staff can publish Open Access in many leading journals without paying author's fees. This scheme is expanded from last year's version, and now includes Taylor & Francis, Sage, and Elsevier in addition to the ones included last year such as Wiley and Brill.

I can't emphasise how important this is: Open Access publishing in peer-reviewed scholarly journals gives your work a much broader audience. The library's new agreements mean that author's fees for publishing 'gold' (total) Open Access are waived for many of these publishers' journals if you work at the ANU. For information on the scheme, please see here."

I was truly shocked by Louise Milligan's report on Opus Dei schools. Should we do an audit of who gets taught what where? Or should we just defund private schools? smh.com.au/national/why-we-sho

This by @clmorgan is still so so depressingly true. Feminist fore-parents, please please put your old conference proceedings online! I'm desperate to read your meditations on gender and technology from 1991 or your comments on gender and bodies from 1988 but I can't even find a table of contents for many 'classic' works in #FeministArchaeology and #GenderArchaeology

Neanderthals That Decorated Their Caves With Giant Skulls Discovered

Researchers at the Museum of Archaeology and Paleontology for the Community of Madrid, Spain, have recently uncovered what looks to be a decorative assemblage of enormous animal skulls in a Neanderthal cave—which appear to have been collected with symbolic intent.

Two black and white linocuts from the essay. The top one shows a snowy mountainscape and a small man; the seond, a map, in front of which stands a man in old fashioned cold gear and the words "Franz-Joseph Land" and "Kara Sea"A black and white linocut from the essy, an orca above a sea of waves, two dimensionalScreenshot of the intro of the essay: "North of the Russian coast, on an island in the midst of Franz Joseph Land, sits the abandoned Ernst Krenkel Observatory, a former Soviet rocket launching site and hydrometeorological station. The relics of this ghostly landscape recall images of dismemberment: empty wooden houses, bone-dry and pale, are kept company by the corroding frames of long-neglected machinery. The rotting shell of an Ilyushin 14-T cargo plane lays heavy like a stranded whale on the bare rocky ground."
