I wish you would call them LLM outputs rather than AI outputs. I know you think it doesn't matter, I know you think it's better to use the popular term. But the popular term is popular because of successful marketing by extractive capitalists bent on making sure you are stupid and desperate.

There's plenty that's artificial about LLMs, but there's no intelligence whatsoever.

Thank you, people of Mastodon!

After my leave from Twitter, I still have not found a place I would call home, like I did with Twitter.

Mastodon, as it stands, with all its faults (for me, especially missing an algorithmic timeline), is my favorite network — especially after Meta went Maga.

You're all great! And you're all so helpful!

Thank you, and have a great 2025 (against all odds)

This video is one of the most important videos I have seen on the war.

@anderspuck explains why both Trump and many EU politicians are completely wrong about the war. Because they think, success is defined by reaching a ceasefire and peace negotiations, when in fact those negotiations are what can deliver a victory to Vladimir Putin, moments before he would otherwise have lost the war.

I hope Mr. Puck gets a gazillion views on this one:

@Lazarou I recently watched a documentary on how people react in life-or-death situations, and the concept of Tonic Immobility came to mind (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/). Life in the 20th century seemed simpler, but perhaps it was equally complex—we were just less inundated with information. Today, constant exposure to global crises can create a sense of paralysis, like seeing a meteor hurtling toward you and feeling there’s nothing you can do.

The sheer scale of the world's problems feels overwhelming, like a flaming meteorite. This paralysis stems from the belief that meaningful action is impossible. But change must be incremental, focused, and rooted in personal relevance—otherwise, it’s too easily dismissed as "someone else’s problem." I don’t have all the answers, but there’s a lingering sadness and sense that we’re regressing rather than progressing.

@Lazarou This article really struck me: shatterzone.substack.com/p/all. One line in particular stood out: "Luigi Mangione was radicalized by pain." It’s heartbreaking to reflect on how many mass shooters are disillusioned individuals seeking some sense of significance. The media attention surrounding this event feels like a potential tipping point.

It’s deeply saddening that violence so often becomes a catalyst for change. We should aspire to be a nation capable of evolving without such tragedies, yet Mangione’s actions will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences. I sincerely hope this spurs meaningful, positive change, though I can’t help but worry that it might instead lead to more violence. Let’s hope for a future shaped by compassion and understanding, rather than further pain.

Age is catching up to our remaining lab, Malcolm. He's just shy of 14, and showing increasing signs of doggie dementia or similar. He's having more accidents, more trouble walking/getting up, and seems to be "sundowning" at night - anxious pacing, etc. Doesn't want to go outside anymore and sniff all the things.

He's the goodest boy. His body is crapping out on him, but he's still a puppy inside. Really sucks, and I wish we could do more for him.

Taking a moment away from the turkey to post this. I don't know who created this joy, but I will play it (repeatedly) every. single. time. I just love it so. Happy Thursday world.

@chris_hayes I've encountered the same in Japan where things are more Macro --> Micro (i.e. Prefecture --> City/Town --> District --> Neighborhood --> location. The times where a street DOES have a name are sometimes very funny. Like in Nagasaki where they chose to write out the phonetic of the Kanji (Japanese Characters) for Foo - Ken - Dori (dori = Street) as "Fuken Street"

todoist.com/inspiration/presen OVERSIMPLIFIED TL;DR --> we often fail at long term goals like saving money and weight loss because it doesn't benefit the "NOW ME" but rather the "FUTURE ME" - that future version of yourself takes up the same space in our minds as complete strangers; it's difficult to take actions that will benefit a complete stranger (even when that stranger is you).

There's a lot of room for whole new experiences and a lot of fun along the way.

Rock on.

I wear the mask, it does not wear me. - That line spoken by Leonardo Dicaprio encompasses so much about life and how we react v respond to things.

With roles in work I've stopped saying someone is replaceable. People are 'repottable.' Like a plant, they're placed in the right pot at the time - but (ideally) they will grow beyond the confines and need to move on to something bigger, leaving that pot for someone else.

Be repottable, don't be the mask.

Part of what's going on is that regulators can't keep up with the rate at which our climate is changing and the degree to which it's leading to increased payouts.

They're trying to keep policies affordable for regular homeowners and business owners.

But what they're finding out is, sometimes they can't.

Increasingly, some properties are so at risk that the only alternative is the state-funded insurer of last resort.

Bar graph: Global insured losses from natural disasters.

The 21st century average is around 80 billion dollars a year, but in 2005, 2011 and 2016 the figure was double that.

Also, every year since 2016 has been above the 21st-century average.

@RobRetro4 @zxm I like the use of Z80 code to shift the sector for recognition. Simple solutions are best. Quite the rabbithole that thread opens up though - time to shift back to my other projects :)

2023-11-09

@zxm @RobRetro4 I've tried that with HDD systems but the read/write capacity is too large and the system doesn't recognize the device. I haven't tried it with PCMCIA and am unsure what the firmware protocols in place would be. How would the device recognize the capacity and read/write from the memory? Can the driver(s) on the device be updated to recognize newer PCMCIA cards?

2023-11-09

@RobRetro4 THIS... this is why I have boxes with weird cables, small crates with memory cards (no 1MB PCMCIA), and other gizmos, gadgets, and whatnot. I'm confident the day I throw out a cable, I'll need the charger/device/etc. for something and realize what I did to the cable needed... It'd be nice if there were some type of "tech library" people could donate to and checkout for projects...
