All the storms & rain have me going stir-crazy. I've had this #PixieKit for 2 yrs. Fun little project. We'll test it out this weekend during questionable #SpaceWeather #SpaceWx conditions. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio #QRP #QRPp #MorseCode CW

Today’s view of our star as seen from West Seattle. Sunspot group 4079 is showing us more detail as it turns towards us.

A bright sun with a uniform orange surface, featuring a large sunspot region visible on the left side and a smaller just off from center.

#hfbandconditions are living up to the #spaceweather #spacewx hype. Nice spring hike in the woods though with an added bonus of a cw #morsecode #qrpr #hb1b #pota #parksontheair activation #QSO with Howie #ac4fs #amateurradio #hamradio

What's the deal with #6meters. It is really quiet. Did I miss some #spacewx event? This is my first time on the "the magic band". #hamradio #AmateurRadio

This month, the Sun’s 11-year activity cycle will be nearing its maximum point. ☀️

Join Dr. Sten Odenwald to learn about the solar cycle & explore activities related to solar flares, cosmic rays & astronaut hazards.

Anxious to hear Dr. Odenwald's conclusion that THIS MONTH the sun will be nearing it max point for #solarcycle25 #spaceweather #spacewx #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

CME-related solar wind disturbances are starting to taper off, allowing the geomagnetic field to calm somewhat; currently seeing G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm conditions, with a G3+ warning remaining in effect through 0600 UTC (about 2.5 hours from now).

Just went out in the backyard for a bit and turned off all the lights to let my eyes adjust; I could *maybe* see a slight reddish cast to the north, but I wouldn't really call that “visible”. My phone, however, caught it a bit more distinctly. (That last shot was pointing the phone straight up, with the bottom half being north).

G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm conditions continue, and I'm seeing posts reporting that aurora are visible at least as far south as Boston, MA.

Long-duration flare in progress from (former) AR3842 on the far side of the west limb; X-ray flux starting to level off around M2.7 (R1 - Minor radio blackout).

Current space weather conditions:

-R1 (Minor) radio blackout — X-ray flare in progress from AR3842 around the west limb
-S1 (Minor) solar radiation storm — continued proton event from the X1.8 flare
-G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storm — CME arrival from the X1.8 flare

Geomagnetic storm thresholds are based on total measured variations in the Earth's magnetic field within a given 3-hour UTC synoptic period (0000-0300, 0300-0600, etc), with the scale resetting at the start of each new 3-hour block.

You can see this in effect in the 5th row of this graphic, where the Predicted Estimated Kp (planetary K-index) drops to 0 every three hours.

G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm conditions once again being observed.

Been busy with work for the last couple hours, but G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm conditions were observed about an hour and a half ago.

Tonight's #aurora forecast looks promising. Might take a trip up to Marin tonight.

The latest US Air Force magnetometer analysis report estimates that geomagnetic field disturbances reached the equivalent of G5 geomagnetic storm conditions for the 3-hour period from 1300-1600 UTC.

Interestingly, it seems that the CME is somehow impacting X-ray monitoring instrumentation on GOES-16 and -18 — readings have gone a bit wobbly over the last hour.

The aurora viewline forecast for tonight is worth keeping an eye on, if storm conditions persist at predicted levels.
