“The Starry Night” Follows Laws of Physics That Weren’t Discovered Yet

Art lovers have long known that the Dutch painter saw the night sky like nobody else — and now scientists know it, too.

Troubled artist or mad scientist? As it turns out, Vincent van Gogh might have been both — a new study reveals that the brushstrokes from his iconic “The Starry Night” (1889) align rather seamlessly with the laws of fluid motion in physics.

Vincent van Gogh, "The Starry Night" (1889), oil on canvas, 28 7/10 x 36 1/5 inches (73 x 92 cm) (public domain via Wikimedia Commons)

The Starry Night is the only nocturne in the series of views from his bedroom window. In early June, Vincent wrote to Theo, "This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big". Researchers have determined that Venus (sometimes referred to as the "morning star") was indeed visible at dawn in Provence in the spring of 1889, and was at that time nearly as bright as possible. So the brightest "star" in the painting, just to the viewer's right of the cypress tree, is Venus.

The Moon is stylized, as astronomical records indicate that it was waning gibbous at the time Van Gogh painted the picture, and even if the phase of the Moon had been its waning crescent at the time, Van Gogh's Moon would not have been astronomically correct. The one pictorial element that was not visible from Van Gogh's cell is the village, which is based on a sketch made from a hillside above the village of Saint-Rémy. Pickvance thought was done later, and the steeple more Dutch than Provençal, a conflation of several Van Gogh had painted and drawn in his Nuenen period, and thus the first of his "reminisces of the North" he was to paint and draw early the following year. Hulsker thought a landscape on the reverse was also a study for the painting.

I keep seeing people wonder why Trump and men like him seem so obsessed with masculinity, and unfortunately, it's pretty simple. They don't see women as people, only commodities. Femininity is not something to be appreciated or celebrated, but rather bought and used. The saddest part is the women who either seem to agree with him or choose to be complicit in perpetuating it.

Go Dominion, go.
Don't hesitate, just do it.
Many of us need to see the rule of law exercised.

On this day in 1893, silent superstar Lillian Gish was born in Springfield, Ohio. In 1988, I wrote to her asking if silent films had actual dialogue written out in the scripts or if there was just a general description of what was being said. This was her remarkable reply.

A parable. When you go under the Bloor viaduct, only sometimes do you see a train. A certain disappointed kid might say, "The train tracks are always empty!" It's true, they are. And yet, that train moves half a million people every day, more than any of Toronto's highways.

Do not be deceived by the visual magnitude of traffic. When it comes to moving people, the train and the bike lane win.

The Bloor Viaduct as seen from the Don Valley Parkway. The subway can sometimes be seen crossing the bridge on the lower level.
