Greg

I'm a dad who hikes and backpacks whenever I can. I'm slowly getting a local group of outdoorsy friends together. mainly I'm looking to share and learn routes, recipes, and tricks. I like to travel with a few creature comforts but nothing that makes noise.

I write when I have something to write about at grayarea@writefreely.org. Photos at grayarea@pixelfed.social.

The floppy hat is partly in homage to a SoCal local named Will Thrall, who was instrumental in conserving our local mountains.

Ornamental flowering quince. The blossoms sneak up in full bloom; I have never seen a bud. #Bloomscrolling

Ornamental quince, carmine red blossom on an aged white stucco wall, with a partial shadow and two young leaves around the calyxOrnamental quince, smaller simple blossom under foliage, in a red glazed pot with a Guy Fawkes gnome lurking in the background

- Aztec dancers with drums setting the cadence for the march amidst the rainbow of Angelenos singing and shouting slogans
- A second line band set up at the Grand Avenue metro station wailing away

This city thrives in its diversity, because of its immigrants, and that really pisses Trump and Miller off. Miller especially knows his hometown has wholeheartedly rejected him.

Other observations:
- National Guard troops outside federal buildings, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, bored and listless, with no effort to maintain any sort of aloof isolation from the body of protestors as they walked by. They clearly did not want to be there and we felt kinda sorry for them.
- LAFD ambulance on a call (not obstructed by protests in any way!) making sure to honk extra while passing a corner protest, with the EMT in the passenger seat taking photos of the protesters cheering.

LA turned out! Loud, proud, and, well, completely and utterly not lawless. This was the early bird crowd. Protests in the hoods too, I don't think we saw anyone in HLP without a sign. #nokings #chingalamigra #highlandpark

Found in an abandoned meander halfway down Paria Canyon #mosstodon #lichensubscribe

Globular moss in a dry canyon, forming only on a specific topological surface. Also a cyan element that may indicate a symbiote

A few vanity shots of muddy shoes and people #pariacanyon #backpacking #canyon

Our first day, squelching through the characteristically silty Paria RiverMy muddy shoes after the first day. Topo Traverse, very comfy all things consideredNatural cubby for our shoes. Even dirty kicks need cozy spacesOf course I slogged across deep mud to get a photo and, while happy with my result, walked right into the deepest part and faceplanted while wearing a 50lb pack.

We did it! 5 days, 4 nights, 45ish miles, one dunk in a muddy river, and the time of our lives. #pariacanyon #buckskingulch #backpacking #slotcanyon

Looking through a natural tunnel that dwarfs my hiking companionsThe morning view from our first night in Buckskin Gulch as the sun hits the verdant trees in a tall canyonBuckskin Gulch at a narrow pointA gigantic hollow with the Paria River running through it. Normal size hiker who looks as tall as an ant for scale

Tomorrow morning we start a 38 mile canyon trek through Paria Canyon, one of the longest slot canyon complexes around. It's a bucket list trip, and we are doing it in 5 days so we can explore all the side canyons, grottoes, and petroglyphs. Pics to come! #pariacanyon #canyoneering #hiking #backpacking

@Chrissy that sounds absolutely fantastic. Have a great time!

@bergmeister the only truly fashionable kind of tan

Mount Waterman in the Angeles National Forest after last week's storm was pretty great for an hour's drive from Downtown. The kids had fun and the pack mules pictured here were very well treated. Not really enough snow for the snowshoes but I always hold out hope.

@bergmeister it very much was, as were the numerous hot toddies afterward

We didn't get into the Angeles Forest (stove restrictions and didn't feel like cold camping) so we hung in Idyllwild instead and worked on our comfort food and over packing skills.

@jds Mt Wilson looked pretty hesterday. I'm going up to Cooper Trail Camp this weekend to see how things look!

@thegeloman solo expeditions ftw.

We don't get out often (a common refrain) but I'm grateful that my brother in law likes backpacking. Angeles National Forest before the Eaton fire, though the trail was stained red from retardant drops from earlier years. Mount Islip to Little Jimmy Camp, then next day to Mount Hawkins

@jds love the Circle of Solitude. I once tried to go up the pass from the slippery side. Lost a great pair of pants that day. Best moonlit night bivy at the lake though.

Wailoa Valley, the secret childhood home of King Kamehameha. Pono says to enjoy from a distance and not to disturb this sacred place, so that's what we did. #bigisland #kamehameha

Pretty fine day poking around Hilo. Tomorrow we hike a volcano. #hilo #hawaii

I don't know what this flower is but the quick snap I took turned out startlingly coolRainbow Falls, with two cascades over a cave where Maui was said to battle a giant lizard who was threatening his mother.Looking back up from about 300 feet inside a lava fube
