September 9, 1983: I made my way to Thunderstorm Junction, a spot where several trails intersect in a high saddle between three of the five peaks of Mount Adams. I left the Appalachian Trail behind for a while and turned onto Lowe’s Path for the long climb to Adams' 5798-foot main peak.

The views from the open alpine summit of Mount Adams. Beneath a soft blue, partly cloudy sky we can see every inch of the trail ahead from the pass below to the granite summit of Madison. Some low stunted trees, barely shrubs, clung to a few partially sheltered spots in and near the pass. The rest of the trail is across bare rock with patches of gold, grass-like plants about the height of a suburban lawn. Between the naked rocks there are green patches of small stunted shrubs or trees far down the sides of the mountain, nowhere near the ridge crest. Smaller wooded mountains are visible in the distance beyond Madison to our left.

August 17, 1983: Three miles later, I was at Finerty Pond. The next good water on the trail was more than eight miles ahead, so I settled for bad water and pitched my tent for the night. I was not about to drink pond water without boiling it for several minutes. I was forced to drink hot chocolate with my meal. Mmmm, mmmm.

Der schwarze Roller, welchen wir für die nächsten 3 Tage gemietet hatten, hat diesmal schon vor der Fahrt den Geist aufgegeben.

Ein kurzer Anruf und 20 min später wurde uns ein anderer (Farbe weiß) geliefert.

Wenn man den günstigen Roller der Stadt mietet, muss man eben solch kleine Widrigkeiten in Kauf nehmen. Ebenso wie die nicht vorhandene Ladebuchse fürs Navi.

Aber genau für diesen Fall habe ich so eine in meinen Reisegepäck.

June 9, 1983: I eased the puppy off my pack and lifted it onto my shoulders. The Appalachian Trail crossed Virginia Highway 601, a narrow, rural road, and went through an open field for a short distance before disappearing into the trees. I said good-bye to my two new friends and turned away, crossing the road and the field without looking back.

July 28, 1983: The Appalachian Trail followed paved roads out of Delaware Water Gap into New Jersey. I passed a coke machine along the way. I soon reached the I-80 bridge over the Delaware River, which had a pedestrian walkway the AT followed across.

May 16, 1983: The rain continued to slacken, finally tapering off by mid-morning. We had a late start to Fontana, but it was only a 7-mile hike. The sun began to break out as we climbed the Yellow Creek Range. The trail was not overly difficult, and the afternoon turned out to be a pleasant one.

We are standing high atop a mountain. The sun is shining brightly. We are standing beside a flowering tree looking out at other trees covered with small bright green sprouting leaves or white buds. Below us is a valley with a large hydroelectric dam and its lake. The trees below us are intensely green, it is late spring down there. Although we cannot see the sky in this photo, the shadows below tell us it is mostly sunny in and around the valley. Beyond the lake the forested slopes of a towering mountain range rise from the lake, eventually disappearing into a deck of clouds sitting over the mountaintops.

September 8, 1983: After Eisenhower, the trail descended into a col before another stiff climb up Mount Franklin, the first 5000-footer of the day. The sky had cleared very nicely by the time I reached this peak.

An alpine plateau in gold-tinged slanting evening sunlight beneath a soft blue sky. Much of the plateau and small portions of the peaks have a ground cover of golden grass-like plants with patches of green, leafy ground-hugging plants. Everything else is bare gray granite boulders and rock outcrops. Three nearby peaks rise above the plateau on our right. Beyond the three peaks, the top of a much higher peak is hidden by a long dark cloud, which casts a dark shadow on the rest of the peak and a spur ridge of that mountain.

Wir haben uns in Viang Vieng für ein paar Tage ein Zimmer genommen. Die Stadt ist eine kleine Backpacker Hochburg mit vielen Aktivitäten (Kajak und Baggy fahrn, Gleitschirm und Heißluftballon fliegen, Tubbing, etc).

Die Kajaktour heute morgen haben wir selbst auch gebucht. Das war eine sehr entspannte Aktivität, die Abwechslung in den Reisealltag bringt.

Zum Tagesausklang wird zum Abendessen wieder der Mond beobachtet.

August 7, 1983: I left the Brien Shelter at 6:00. It had taken me an hour to regroup — psychologically more than physically. All day, I had been driving this out-of-shape body towards a single goal: that shelter. Then, I discovered I had to push it farther to water that probably did not exist. We are in a field of waist-high weeds atop an otherwise open ridge crest. At the edge of the field ahead, the forest begins. Several of the trees at the edge of the field and beginning of the forest are dead. Several taller larger wooded hills rises above us ahead. The sky is very light blue, almost white. The angle of shadows and the golden hue of the light tell us the sun is close to setting, offscreen to our left. A series of other ridges cascade into the distance, gradually dissolving into the thick haze.

Heute geht es mit dem Zug weiter nach Viang Vieng. Davor besuchten wir aber noch den Lebensmittelmarkt in Luang Prabang.

June 29, 1983: After a seven-mile morning, I followed the half-mile side trail from the AT to Wiggins Spring Shelter. I had been told that the water from this spring was worth the trip in itself, and, anyway, a backpacker needs a place at which to lay back with his boots off at some point during the course of a twenty-two-mile day.
