I’m digging into #chi2023 data on reviewing - will maybe work on a blog post about it. What would you want to know about the number of reviewers and length of reviews?

🚨 This is about as bad as it gets, and three days before Christmas.
LastPass says customer password vaults were stolen in a data breach earlier this year.

I never did a proper #introduction when I moved to mastodon. #ucirvine posted my “what matters to me and why” talk though, and it’s a pretty good intro.

In short, I’m a failed biologist turned computer scientist turned vice provost who deeply believes that literally everything can be made better and that we all, every one of us, has a responsibility to make it better in whatever small way we can. It was a lovely way to reflect on my life and career.
We normally promote the conference Tech Intersections: Women of Color in Computing on #Twitter but won't this year for obvious reasons.
Please help us spread the word about this #bipoc conference in #Oakland #California.
We're offering 20% off with promo code MASTODON. #BlackMastodon #BlackFriday
We are giving free tickets to people who have been laid off with promo code LAIDOFF.

The event includes an #ally skills workshop for supporters of #woc.
It’s time for me to start harassing @jbigham with all my students’ milestones on a new platform. Congratulations to Lucretia Williams for passing her proposal today!
One of the most important lessons you can learn in work and in life is that things will change, often suddenly and dramatically. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket, that kind of thing. But also don't view change as some negative thing that should be stigmatized, don't get complacent and don't settle. You're going to have a bigger impact on the world in your 30s than in your 20s, in your 40s than your 30s, in your 50s than your 40s. This is what it means to live a life.
Weeks the median male worker needed to work to afford a year's worth of major expenses (house, a car, health care and education) for a family of four in
1985: 30 weeks (out of 52)
2018: 53 weeks (out of 52)

My department is hiring an Assistant Professor of Social Data Science! I would love for this job to go to someone knowledgeable about open science, reproducibility, and meta-science. Our department is fun, supportive, and has extensive expertise in structural equation modeling, Bayesian stats, regularization, text mining, meta-science, and research synthesis. The campus has a small forest, and the city can be easily reached from Utrecht, Rotterdam, even Amsterdam. https://tiu.nu/21154
My kids outgrew wanting to be in the bathroom with me just in time for our dog to decide I absolutely can never be alone under any circumstances.
JOB OPPORTUNITY
My old program (Just Tech) at my old org (SSRC) is hiring a program officer to work specifically on the Just Tech Fellowship, helping to run workshops, build community among fellows, and expand the Just Tech network. This is a great gig for an early career PhD (MA OK, too) thinking about an #altac career. Strong applicants will have experience in the tech x justice world and be great networkers. Feel free to DM if you have Qs!
@natematias @mixedlinguist @alex @emilymbender it may be personal preference but I like the long letters. My favorites are ones with very clear paragraph structures that possibly even have subheadings or bonded parts so I can quickly find nuggets but read for more context in those that I need/want.
Wanted to share that my favorite book on disability this year is free / open access from Duke U Press!
Black Disability Politics by Sami Schalk deep dives into historical Black activism to examine how the work embodied Black disability politics, often in a way white disability activists have not recognized. The author also interviews some of today's Black #DisabilityJustice advocates.

If you use a screen reader and are worried about reports that Masto is less accessible than we'd like, try https://pinafore.social/ - it's a webapp with a much more simple interface than Masto itself plus it has thoughtul wellbeing settings too!
Do you know a graduating PhD student, or recent grad, who has done outstanding HCI research? Consider nominating them (or ask someone else to) for the SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award.
The deadline for nominations is *December 5* (anywhere on earth) and the details are here: https://sigchi.org/awards/.

Flashing back to the amazing panel I got to be a part of for the #LATimes #InspirationalWomen event. We talked mentoring, retention, and supporting all who identify as women. You can read the magazine online at https://www.latimes.com/b2bpublishing
@malte @andresmh yes @malte is correct. I was just noting that a qt would have been my more natural way to ask you how to help given the other toot. Anywho….. what about those of us with no expertise and even less time? I just don’t want to freeload off your generosity too much but realistically haven’t built my own server for anything other than Minecraft in years, so I’m not sure how much help I can be.
@andresmh oops I missed a lot of conversation. I didn’t actually mean please make quote tweet (though great if people do). I meant, how do we pay you to help maintain our server? :)
As a follow-up from this blog post, here's the 60-second video version of my #PhD application advice! https://www.youtube.com/shorts/tdWeUo66I9Y
RIP #FredBrooks a legend in computer science and software engineering. His Mythical Man-Month book should be required reading for people in the field and is also a historical milestone.
