"We contacted Bitvise, and the company's co-founder told us:

'This domain was registered in 1999 by unrelated third parties. I was miffed how difficult it is to find the official PuTTY download page, so I purchased this domain, and used it to point people to the official PuTTY page. Since I paid money for this, I also used it to mention my own software.

Now communists hate me for this. So I updated the page to provide a more important, critical public service.'

Now PUTTY.ORG no longer links to Bitvise's own software; instead, it embeds a video by a COVID-denialist and anti-vaccination activist."

@neil clever. I always go for audio immediately because it is way easier, but I still hate all of it. Makes sense that a tool makes the same choice

@arjjra wonder how expensive that is! I might just try

@winfried I use restic for backups, it's quite similar to Borg and works very well

thanks to LVM, a 1TB NVMe (which mostly makes no sense for my day to day usage, but storage is cheap these days), and rsync, the migration to ext4 was painless. Now I just need a slightly better backup regime (no btrfs hourly snapshots) or maybe learn to love LVM snapshots.

I reverse engineered the firmware loading utility of a $17 beauty salon spectrophotometer to load the firmware of its "big boy" sibling:

@froztbyte my current feeling is that elbow grease is exactly what I do -not- want to spend :)

I managed to recover it but I have decided that btrfs is not for me. The benefits do not outweigh these surprises.

I used btrfs for my /home on my daily driver laptop for six years. Debian 10 through 12. No trouble. Very happy with the hourly snapshots that saved my ass more than a few times.

This year I again chose btrfs for /home on two new laptops with Debian Trixie (13), one of which is my new daily driver. One (a very small disk!) started exhibiting surprise 'disk full" behaviour very quickly. Okay.

Other laptop, my new daily driver. Today it went from "disk full" to "Filesystem corrupted" in an hour.

I just found a bunch of "dead" links on a website - but they were not 404, they were links to specific knowledge base articles that now redirected (301) to the front page of a new docs website.

So if you're doing link checks, do not just look at 404s. Also look for patterns such as "50 things do a 301 to this same very unspecific target."

This reminds me that the thing that got me to switch away from Google search after 20+ years was the AI summaries. I read so quickly that I can't stop the gen AI garbage from getting into my brain and messing up my efforts to keep out wrong information. Ads are like that too, hence my religious use of adblockers

Yesterday Dutch parliament shamefully passed an extreme law criminalizing being undocumented, and also criminalizing aiding undocumented people. The Dutch national police has now released a statement that they can't support this. Most appreciated. politie.nl/nieuws/2025/juli/4/

Just found screens full of Follow requests resulting from this migration. I have no clue why. All accepted now.

@kevin @agturcz thanks for the ping! I did not respond at the time because we had already accepted a candidate for the C++ position, but needed to work out some details. That position is now filled. We have a Go/K8s opening but it really wants somebody with extensive experience.

I wish you all the best in finding the right spot for yourself!
