New book edited by Joyeeta Gupta Barbara Hogenboom, Arthur Remple and Malin Olofsson ***Leaving Fossil Fuels Underground: Actors, Arguments and Approaches in the Global South and Global North*** appeared this week 🍾 🎉 The contributions link effective climate action to socially & ecologically inclusive development, while also taking stock of dynamics and legitimacy of local resistance. A wonderful first volume in the Liveable Futures Series at Amsterdam University Press!

Check the new EASST Review published just in time for the big #sts conference. Our editorial is quite a political one.

Indeed, it’s time for #easst4s2024! On my way to the registration in Amsterdam, filled with memories of an Utrecht book/zine store.

Book shelf in a book store. Colourful (maga)zines that build a nice mess. It's a lot of local and some international work, queer, artsy, lots of street photography. There's a cozy armchair in the front

Flyways Beyond Migratory Pathways: The Case of Waterbird Conservation
lnkd.in/ecaXBZSt

Migratory birds use 'flyways' as they journey across continents. Different groups of humans also use different knowledge infrastructures and use 'flyways' in contrasting ways to describe important conservation areas. As knowledge infrastructures change over time, this affects how 'flyways' are described.

He was also one of the most powerful and lucid voices when the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies was under threat from the KNAW. I am sad to hear of his death and so grateful to have been able to benefit from his expertise and wisdom--his work in De Correspondent alone made it worth subscribing. Hopefully his legacy will continue to inspire up-and-coming journalists!

What a huge loss for our country. Marc Chavannes could always put his finger on the truly important issues in public debate and shed light on the larger dynamics at play. Whether commenting on privatization, short-sightedness of decisions or the threats of right-wing populism, he always enriched my understanding and made me think harder. Several passages of his article were so accurate and well-formulated, so doeltreffend, I still remember them word for word. nos.nl/artikel/2504405-journal

This fellowship and the ways of working at IAS are ideal to explore something like this, that requires interdisciplinary work that is quite slow, that requires a lot of back and forth, and I am really excited to be able to take on this project for the coming half year.

I think we need to engage with knowledge and with data in a very different way, if we are going to addresss problems like loss of biodiversity of climate change. So my dream is that by developing different interfaces, we might also change how we know about those problems, what we know and how we act.
So while most of our interfaces are actually search boxes… digital media can actually support much more diverse kinds of interactions that search.

2023-10-12

The word interface probably makes you think of a screen, of a specific way to access a service or a source of data. Actually interfaces enable me to do certain things, but not everything. In that sense, they shape how I interact with technologies, or with data, or with people. So interfaces can be pretty powerful ways to direct our actions and our awareness.

In the coming months, I will be spending time in Amsterdam as a joint fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies and the Data Science Centre. During this time, I am going to work together with colleagues from different parts of the University of Amsterdam on the topic of interfaces.

Does science need heroes or does it need to reform? I elaborate on this in a blog post, based on a talk I gave at the recent Rijksmuseum Boerhaave symposium on Prize Cultures. Idolizing heroes can worsen #bias, #inequality, and #competition in science. Yet, it does require good #leadership to ignite structural change. leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/doe

What do researchers care about when they are in the field, taking hold of birds with their hands? What does it mean if they save a flooded nest of the endangered bird they study? What if this affects the course of events they study? And to what extent does data collection that is crucial for robust scientific knowledge on population survival also disturb endangered individuals? Non-promotable work: One study found that women were 2.7x more likely than men to volunteer to serve on a committee. Leaders should compensate and reward women for non-promotable work, ensure women are not overloaded & make sure the work is evenly.
