Took a quick paddle yesterday morning on the Huron. High points were an eagle in Huron Meadows Metropark and the first racing canoe that I've seen on this section in years. Low point was the downed tree that completely blocks the river just downstream from US 23. Tried to saw my way through it from the cockpit but the branch was holding up the tree and a higher branch could have dropped onto my deck.

Paddled from the Portage Lake DNR launch up the Portage River, aka Portage Creek aka Hell Creek, in a totally inappropriate sea kayak. Had to portage a beaver dam but turned back at a property-owner's bridge upstream from Toma Rd rather than trespass on his yard. Highlights included skunk cabbage, dogwood and a water snake. This was the route from Lake Erie's Huron River watershed across #Michigan to Lake Michigan's Grand River watershed.

#trump says #tariffs on aluminum will cause producers to build plants in the US, but no company is going to take that gamble. Smelting uses huge amounts of power, so it is done where there is cheap electricity like in Iceland and Quebec, and typically near a power plant. Just getting the permits and breaking ground will take longer than Trump will be in office, at which point the tariffs come off and the company is screwed.

First signs of #spring in southeast #Michigan. Despite the frozen ground the witch hazel blossoms are unfurling and crocus (in a warm micro-climate) are starting to blossom.

Does anyone know what mammals eat quagga mussels? I found several piles like this today on the Huron River in Island Lake Rec Area, all on water's edge. Mink? Otters? Raccoons? Whatever it is I wish them well! #huronriverSEMichigan #Michigan #invasivespecies
