A chilling reminder that American science denial does not just affect people in the US, it kills people globally.
hey, if you enjoy the #USCSB safety videos, the current administration is putting them on the chopping block with a reported $0 allocated for FY2025 and appropriating their emergency fund for the costs of shutting down the USCSB agency.
they put out a video in an attempt to justify themselves, but if you're in the US then please call and/or write to your congresspeople and ask them to back the CSB. their budget is miniscule for the impact they have.
Things I would like every young web engineer to learn:
- anything you can do in CSS + HTML, you *should* do in CSS + HTML
- *framework du jour* is not a platform, it's a high-interest loan against your future capacity. The platform is the platform
- understanding the memory hierarchy *always* matters
- client-side isn't easier than the server, and "generalists" usually suck at client-side. Mind the (packet) gap
- managers who are not technical are not useful
- put users first, always
'Meredith,' some guys ask, 'why won't you shove AI into Signal?'
Because we love privacy, and we love you, and this shit is predictable and unacceptable. Use Signal ❤️
"I worry about the prince," the king said.
"What is the issue?" said the witch.
"We held balls with all eligible ladies, but he found none. So we held tourneys, with all eligible knights. Still none."
"There are those who seek none."
"So none can turn his head?"
"Perhaps. Ask him."
"Amazing!"
While I'm making AmperSands or skimming stones, the kidbots normally pursue rockpool-based wildlife and wifebot assembles rainbows from whatever stones / shells / sea glass she can find. And, well, it's June, so she made this on Sunday.
All from pebbles found on an otherwise fairly unexciting bit of shore!
Yeah I'll have the uh.. EFI Shell with a diet coke
Big Tech: we invented the torment nexus
Glasses brands: for $54.95, you can slightly reduce the torment

When a user who hasn't logged in to the system before (i.e. doesn't exist in the authd user database) logs in via SSH, the user is considered a member of the root group in the context of the SSH session. That leads to a local privilege escalation if the user should not have root privileges.
Bad guys called "ICE" in a society struggling with Global Warming is some bullshit writing
Today is difficult for a lot of folks. You are seen, and you are not alone.
if you are under 30 years old and picking a font size for something other people need to read, not just yourself: that’s too small. still too small. A LITTLE BIGGER
Yesterday at the offices of Thiel Capital in LA
Overheard yesterday:
"May he die surrounded by friends.
You know, like Julius Caesar."
"This again?" the dragon said. "It's been just a few centuries since the last time.'
"Please," the knight said.
"I asked you to make sure you had a way of getting rid of bad kings yourself, before you made any new ones."
"We didn't understand we made a king."
"You are such fools. Very well."
So the Denmark government is beginning a phased strategy to replace Microsoft Office with LibreOffice:

This follows up an announcement the French/German governments are developing an open-source Notion clone (it's called Docs).
Europe is making a move toward digital sovereignty and it may coincidentally result in a tech stack with properties I want (AI-free, OSS, Linux-compatible). Hm.
