#history folks, I have the end of a letter here:
your friend
and fellow countryman
fellow sufferer and (???)
fellow laborer
Thos Young

What is that word? Best I can get is "miefsant", but that doesn't mean anything. A misspelling? Foreign word?

New Blog Post: You hear it all the time: The Dow is up slightly in moderate trading. The Dow is steady in light trading. It’s inescapable, tagging the end of news broadcasts on radio and television, and faithfully tracked in the financial sections of news websites.

It is also completely useless as financial information, as broadcast and printed. It is not, however, completely useless.

Carrying Place 3
There are two trails; one to what is now (hereafter w.i.n.)Whitehall and another to the south end of Lake George. The L George route requires a second portage at #Ticongeroga to get to the big lake.
Our explorer can travel up the lake to the Richelieu river as far as the rapids at w.i.n. Chambly Quebec. Another portage and flat water to the St Lawrence river and then to the Atlantic.
A 750 mile water highway: Hudson, Champlain, Richelieu, St Lawrence. With one land gap.

Carrying Place 2
Let's say that it is 1608 and you are an ambitious and fearless member of the Lenni Lanape living on the island of Manhattoe. You decide to head north as far as you can go. You put your canoe in the river that flows two ways and start paddling. A few hundred miles north you come to the Great Carrying place and head up a creek on the east bank of the river. At its farthest navigable point you find a trail worn into the ground. It leads to Pitawbagok, "the lake in between."

I'd like to write a bit about one of the more interesting historic places in my area. It's what was known in the 18th c and before as the "Great Carrying Place." It's the rhomboid area roughly defined by Glens Falls NY, Lake George village, #Ticonderoga, and Whitehall. It's the gap between Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. That gap caused a lot of history to happen there.

A map of the area between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. It has markers at Glens Falls, the Southern end of Lake George, the southern end of Lake Champlain at Whitehall, and the northern end of Lake George at Ticonderoga
